My second ever newsletter is here! In the aftermath of Peter Do's debut at Helmut Lang, I'm asking do we even need new ideas from designers anymore? IMO, not really. We should be judging designers' ideas on their longevity, not novelty. Read it here: alecleach.substack.com/

I have no idea how this is gonna play out, but we absolutely need the legal system to be holding fashion accountable for its empty promises. The industry has been talking about sustainability for decades now, and in that time the industry's carbon footprint has only *increased*

TLDR: we are going to see a lot more greenwashing lawsuits unless fashion finally stops pretending that the solution to problems caused by shopping is.....you guessed it, more shopping.

Buying a pair of sneakers will never decrease Nike's carbon footprint (duh) and while there's some nice examples from Nike's Grind program (which recycles old shoes into industrial materials), we don't live in a world where old shoes are magically turned into new ones

It's a classic case of brands promising way, way more than they can deliver — a zero carbon, zero waste fashion industry might be a nice storyline for the marketing team to talk about, but it is simply not possible in the world that we live in
