JUNE 11, 1969: On this day in 1969, @NASA formally announced that the Apollo 11 mission would attempt a lunar landing. The announcement came just weeks after the end of Apollo 10, deemed a highly successful testing mission for the lunar landing.

Artemis III will have some interesting parallels to Apollo 9. Artemis III is scheduled to test lunar landing systems and mission procedures, just like Apollo 9. Artemis III will also remain in Earth orbit following a crewed mission around the Moon, again like Apollo 9!

#MeteorSighting: Eyewitnesses in Ohio and Michigan reported a bright meteor on Monday, June 1, at 10:41p.m. EDT. The data puts first detection of the fireball above the Ohio area near Lima. The meteor moved north-northwest at approximately 49,900 mph before disintegrating above the area just west of Lansing, Michigan. On May 27, 1947, Neil Armstrong graduated from Blume High School in Wapakoneta, Ohio, at the age of 16. Armstrong was active in extracurricular activities at Blume. He participated in band, student council, glee club, and in the class play.

Today, we recognize Sally Ride on what would have been her 75th birthday. Ride made history as America's first woman in space aboard STS-7 in 1983. In 2022, Ride was featured on the reverse side of the quarter as part of the US Mint's American Women program.

On this day in 1969, the Saturn V rocket rolled out of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at Kennedy Space Center. The Apollo 11 crew was there for the historic rollout and posed for photos with their 363-foot-tall ride to the Moon.
