The mum of a Scottish girl who was publicly branded a racist after a viral video showed her holding an axe and a knife has demanded an apology from both Police Scotland and First Minister John Swinney. For over a year, her family says they have lived through hell. When the video first emerged, many people rushed to judgement. Politicians commented. Social media erupted. The girl, who was just 12 years old at the time, was subjected to abuse, threats and accusations. Police and John Swinney appeared to cast doubt on her account after she claimed she had been targeted by Bulgarian man Ilia Belov and had picked up the weapons to scare him away. Now, following court proceedings, her mother says the truth that emerged has left her family asking a simple question: Where are the apologies? A child was condemned in the court of public opinion before all the facts were known. A 12-year-old girl had her name dragged through the mud. Her family say they were left to pick up the pieces while others moved on. If public figures, police officers and commentators were willing to speak out when the allegations were being made, should they now speak out with the same energy if they got it wrong? Because reputations matter. And when the person at the centre of the storm is a child, they matter even more.

I do wonder what the point of a King is if he won’t speak out and stand up for the British people against a tyrannical government.
