ALT Michael Burawoy, a world-renowned sociologist and professor emeritus at UC Berkeley, passed away on February 3 at the age of 77. A transformative scholar and mentor, he shaped the field of sociology over nearly five decades through his groundbreaking research, leadership, and dedication to public sociology. Burawoy, who earned his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1976, joined Berkeley's Sociology Department the same year and remained an influential figure until his retirement in 2023.

ALT He authored 12 books and over 120 works, advancing sociological theory, labor studies, and global scholarly exchange. His leadership extended beyond academia, serving as president of both the American and International Sociological Associations. Renowned for his teaching, he mentored over 80 PhD students and was celebrated for his deep commitment to students and public higher education. His legacy lives on through his contributions to sociology, his advocacy for marginalized voices, and his enduring impact on generations of scholars.

ALT As President of the American Sociological Association, Burawoy championed “public sociology,” inspiring diverse and younger scholars to engage with societal issues beyond academia. As President of the International Sociological Association, he strengthened global scholarly exchange, bridging the “global south” and “global north.” He also founded Global Dialogue (2010-2017), a multilingual journal that expanded access to international sociological research and encouraged U.S. scholars to engage with global perspectives.
