There's already been a handful of basking shark sightings. With some settled weather we should start to see them in more numbers,sometimes very close to shore. Here's a digiscoped clip of what to look for. A large dorsal fin & tail fin few feet behind. #WestCork @BaskingIrish

#DidYouKnow you can report a #BaskingShark sighting? These reports are a great way for researchers to get information on Basking Sharks. Some examples of places you can report a sighting include @SharkTrustUK in the UK, @big_fish_lab in Oregon, and @BaskingIrish in Ireland

ALT a light blue slide reads “Basking shark or great white? Check the dorsal fin. Basking shark dorsal fins are more rounded and smooth while great white dorsal fins are more triangular and jagged. Basking sharks are also much larger than great whites. Basking sharks grow to an average of 26 feet or about 8 meters while great whites grow to an average of 15 feet or 4.5 meters.

How much time do you work in R?
Great question! Last Friday was an R heavy day but that’s because I’m doing primarily analysis right now (less fieldwork/writing). Some weeks I spend no time in R, but other weeks it’s 20 or so hours. It just depends on where I am in my projects!

For many today is a day of national mourning. In recognition of that we would like to acknowledge that the Big Fish Lab and our university, Oregon State University, are located on the lands of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
