My first few weeks as Victims Minister have been full, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. There is no time to waste in making our country safer, protecting survivors and ensuring victims get the support they need. Here’s some of what I’ve been up to:

Victim support must be specialist, trauma-informed and there when people need it most. That is why we are putting more than £14 million into services across the West Midlands, including organisations like @BCWomensAid, helping women and children rebuild after abuse.

Brilliant to see LimeCulture expand their Safety and Support Framework to also help child victims of sexual abuse, with the support of @MoJGovUK funding. We’ll continue working together to protect survivors & tackle violence against women & girls. limeculture.co.uk/ministry-o…

Getting home safe should be a guarantee for every woman after a night out or weekend away, not a text her friends have to wait for. I met hospitality and tourism leaders to discuss action to strengthen safety and help end violence against women and girls. gov.uk/government/news/gover…

The first perpetrator prosecuted for the new sex-based harassment offence has now been sentenced, following his arrest just two days after our new law came into force. A historic step forward in our mission to halve violence against women and girls.

The UK will be the first country where it will be impossible for children to take, share or view naked pictures, a justice minister tells @LeahBoleto. The government says tech companies must stop this happening within three months or they'll be forced to act through legislation.

Tackling violence against women and girls is one of this governments most urgent priorities, and that means acting internationally, not just at home. This week I was at the UN in Vienna sharing strategies, building partnerships & pushing for women’s safety as a worldwide priority

The Government has invested in Derby’s new Youth Hub at Friar Gate Studios, and the place had a real buzz about it. It brings support, advice, training and apprenticeships together, helping young people build confidence, find opportunities and take their next steps into work.

Another step forward for walkers, cyclists and everyone who loves the Derwent Valley. The Derwent River Way has planning permission now granted subject to conditions. Huge credit to Derwent Valley Trust and the volunteers driving this brilliant local project.

Derby has always known a thing or two about building trains. Great to see the next generation doing just that with Primary Engineer and Rail Forum, as local pupils built, tested and problem-solved together while learning where STEM skills can take them.

From launching Team Derby to joining the Ministry of Justice team, it’s been a busy few weeks in Derby and Westminster. With plenty happening in between, catch up with what I’ve been up to here 👇

As Victims Minister, I’m clear: supporting survivors of domestic abuse means action, investment and the right local support. Over £1 billion is being invested over 3 years for VAWG victims, including safe accommodation, advocacy, counselling and specialist services.

Answering questions for the first time as Victims Minister, I was thinking of the survivors, families, services, campaigners and MPs whose work I build on, including Baroness Harman and Alex Davies-Jones. My job now is to listen, work hard and deliver change victims deserve.

Spoke to Becky on BBC Radio Derby this morning about how this Labour Government is backing Derby. More than 1,000 new Rolls-Royce jobs, £10 million for Team Derby and £20 million for Chaddesden show what that means in practice. Jobs, investment and pride in our city.

With this Labour Government, Britain has seen inflation come down, six interest rate cuts and borrowing fall. The PM’s steady leadership means we are better able to protect families, support businesses, work with allies and face global challenges.

Thank you. I’m looking forward to working closely together to improve support for victims and make sure their voices help shape a stronger, fairer justice system, building on the excellent work of @AlexDaviesJones and the care and commitment she brought to the role.
My congratulations to @catkinson80 on her appointment as Victims Minister at @MoJGovUK. There is much to do to improve victims’ experience of the justice system, and I look forward to working closely with Catherine on that shared priority.

Tomorrow is the King’s Speech. Since the last one, Labour has delivered change to improve lives, from renters’ rights and action on child poverty to safer streets, rail public ownership and Great British Energy. Much more still to do, but Labour is getting on with the job.

PM is right to focus on getting on with the job. We face a less safe world with global instability adding to cost of living pressures for households. At this serious moment for our country, public service means hard work, stability & delivery, not Westminster turning in on itself
BREAKING The Prime Minister told a meeting of the Cabinet: “As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised. “The past 48 hours have been destabilising for government and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families. “The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered. “The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet.” Ends
