It's an early start this morning as I set off for ResearchED East Anglia. 🌅 I'm genuinely looking forward to the day ahead. Conferences like this remind me why I love education. They bring together people who are passionate about making a difference for children and young people, and I'm looking forward to catching up with colleagues, meeting others in person for the first time after many online conversations (do you hear me @Shabnamagram), and learning from an outstanding line-up of speakers. I'm also really excited to be delivering my session on Calm Leadership. Leadership has never been more challenging, and I'm looking forward to sharing some of the ideas behind my book, Calm Leadership: Staying Grounded, Staying In Control and Staying The Course, as well as hearing the experiences and perspectives of others in the room. Calm Leadership Lesson: You do not know your strength until you are required to be strong. Leadership can be a lonely place at times. There are moments when the weight of responsibility feels heavy, when the path ahead is unclear, and when others are looking to you for certainty despite your own doubts. Yet it is often during these moments that we discover what we are truly capable of. Like the flower pushing through cracked ground, strength is not developed in comfort. It is revealed through challenge, adversity and perseverance. Many of the strongest leaders I know never set out to be resilient. Circumstances simply demanded it of them. The difficult days do not define us. They develop us. Calm Leaders understand that resilience is not about avoiding pressure. It is about remaining grounded, staying in control and staying the course when pressure arrives. Last Saturday, I had the privilege of speaking in South London at the Creative Inclusive Pathways for All Young People event alongside SEN Bytes and PGS - Educators . My message was simple: Heart over data. Data matters… of course it does. We must understand it, interrogate it and use it wisely. But true inclusion is about more than numbers, spreadsheets or outcomes alone. A child may feel that they belong… …but do they know that they matter? That distinction matters deeply. At Highgate Wood School, our motto is: “Everyone matters, everyone achieves.” For me, inclusion is not simply about creating spaces where young people are present. It is about building cultures where they feel seen, valued and significant. Because belonging gets children through the door… Knowing they matter can change their life.
