The more we know about what helps β€” and harms β€” LGBTQ youth, the better we can support them. We must look at both the risk factors β€” things that increase the likelihood that an LGBTQ kid will develop serious mental health problems β€” and the protective factors, or things that reduce that risk. If a young person has a lot of risk factors and hardly any protective factors, they are particularly vulnerable. On the other hand, if they have a fair number of risk factors but a lot of protective factors, they may be less vulnerable.

The UK might ban social media for under-16s β€” and Wellcome Trust is funding the research to find out if it actually helps. @wellcometrust's Catherine Sebastian breaks down how they'll track it: studies that follow teens over time, "natural experiments" around 16th birthdays, even real-time data from phones. Not just does it work... but why. πŸ‘€

Mindfulness doesn't have to mean meditation apps or carved-out sessions β€” it can live inside the moments you're already having. Dinner, a walk, bedtime, a quiet journal β€” these are all opportunities hiding in plain sight.
