Update on Fire at 2209 Atkins Avenue: This morning, May 7, at approximately 9:20am, Port Coquitlam Fire & Emergency Services responded to a three-storey residential structure fire at 2209 Atkins Avenue. The fire has been contained and all roads are now open. Crews remain on scene completing overhaul operations, supporting the fire investigation, and assisting residents in retrieving essential items where safe to do so. Two confirmed injuries were reported related to smoke inhalation and minor burns. No reported fatalities. Emergency Support Services has been activated, and accommodations and essential supports are being provided for residents who have been displaced. City Public Works crews were working in the area when they noticed smoke, immediately called 911, and entered the building to help ensure occupants were evacuating. Their quick actions provided important early notification and gave residents more time to safely leave the building. “On behalf of Council and our community, I want to thank Port Coquitlam Fire & Emergency Services, our Public Works crews, Emergency Support Services volunteers, and all emergency responders for their quick, professional and coordinated response,” said Mayor Brad West. “A fire like this is devastating for residents, but the actions taken today helped protect lives, pets and personal belongings. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted, and the City will continue supporting affected residents throughout the recovery process.” The cause of the fire remains under investigation. At this time, it does not appear suspicious; however, a final determination has not been made. #PortCoquitlam

Rainfall & Flood Watch Update 🚧 | Wednesday, March 18 at 3:30pm The BC River Forecast Centre has upgraded the Highstream Flow Advisory to a Flood Watch for our region. The following closures are in place as City crews complete further preventive work: ⛔ As a preventative measure, Coast Meridian Road from Lincoln Avenue to Patricia Avenue is closed until further notice. An excavator and tiger dams have been staged at Hyde Creek where it crosses Coast Meridian Road, and an additional pump and generator have been deployed to Cedar Pump Station to prevent flooding. ⛔ All trails and turf fields are closed until further notice. River flows are high, water levels can rise quickly and banks may be unstable. Please avoid rivers, creeks and trails. City crews are: ✅ Actively maintaining critical storm sewer infrastructure across Port Coquitlam, including clearing trash racks, catch basins, culverts and outfalls to help keep water moving through the system ✅ Deployed on both the north and south sides of the City to monitor known flood-prone areas and take action where needed. This work is supported by a dedicated pump maintenance crew and flush truck team, which will remain in service throughout the event. ✅ Keeping public access sandbag stations stocked at Cedar Park and Public Works Yard stocked. Stay safe and prepared: ➡️ Download the Alertable App to receive any important alerts. ➡️ Stay out of closed trails and avoid all rivers and creeks. Banks may be unstable. ➡️ Drive with care, watch for water pooling on roads, and check conditions before you head out. Don't walk or drive through pooling water. ➡️ Check gutters, drains and nearby catch basins to ensure they are not blocked. ➡️ Floodplain maps and flood preparedness resources are available at portcoquitlam.ca/flood. To report after-hours City service issues, please contact 604.927.3111. We are continuing to respond, monitoring conditions closely and will provide further updates as needed. #PortCoquitlam #CityOfPoCo

The Province has announced licensed premises can open at 5:00am Sunday for the Gold Medal game, with municipal approval. By order of the Mayor — approved. 🍺 🇨🇦 ALL licensed establishments in good standing can extend their liquor service hours to accommodate the game. Hockey families already know: Sleep is temporary. Gold is forever.

A high steamflow advisory affecting Port Coquitlam has been issued. High river flows are expected due to heavy rainfall rates and rain-on-snow melt runoff throughout the region. Rivers are expected to rise Saturday, with peak levels later Saturday or into Sunday morning. ⚠️ Please use caution near waterways, avoid potentially unstable banks, and keep pets and kids far back. City crews will prepare, monitor and respond as needed.
