When young people tell us they don’t think they’ll ever own their own home in Australia, something has to change.

New ABS data shows building approvals up 10.2% in April compared to a year ago. 16,700 homes were approved in April 2026, up from 15,200 in April 2025 and 13,600 in April 2024. This is particularly encouraging, as it provides our first look at housing activity since the start of the Middle East conflict. We’ve made significant progress in homebuilding – with approvals, commencements, and completions all higher than when the Albanese Government was elected. The Middle East conflict will continue to put pressure on construction costs, but we’re maintaining momentum, despite the challenging conditions.

Some big housing news for the Sunshine State.
