We’re the District’s legislature and a coequal branch of DC government. On social media, our goal is to engage in an informative and conversational way.
Born on yesterday’s date in 1924: Home Rule's first-ever Ward 5 Councilmember, William Spaulding, who served from 1975 to 1987. Sadly, he passed away in 2021. Here is a remembrance of his life and accomplishments: bit.ly/3mP6cvJ

On yesterday’s date in 1825, Pierre L'Enfant died. He designed the plan (big ups also to Ellicott & Banneker) for the federal capital in DC. He's buried in Arlington Cemetery, overlooking the city he designed.
He knew the DC diamond, but never envisioned the Pentagon or octagon.
Are you a grouch? Do you think “Sure, I’ll support DC statehood…if your damned flag flies to the Moon and back!”
Well great, because it already did, in 1969
We’ll just send over the DC statehood paperwork for you to sign. Much obliged. And Happy Flag Day!
Born on this date: A politician the Post called "passionate & sharp-tongued" & "unfazed by criticism." Who? Not the guy you might have heard about on the news today. Who but...the late At-Large CM Hilda Mason. Here's what Marion Wright Edelman said of her: bit.ly/2JBV1Fx
Born on yesterday’s date in 1918-former At-Large Councilmember Jerry Moore. He died in 2017. He served from the dawn of Home Rule until 1985. He was nominated by President Bush to serve as ambassador to Lesotho, but the Senate never acted on the nomination wapo.st/3xnrG6d
June 13 is a date when the stork smiled on the District of Columbia:
* Born on this date in 1927: the late Ben Ali, co-founder (with his wife, Virginia) of DC landmark @benschilibowl
* Also celebrating a birthday today: @eleanornorton

The “great wait” (see what we did?) is nearly over! Brave the heat and head to MLK Library tonight for a panel discussion on Advisory Neighborhood Commissions. Among the panelists: obscure former looooooong-serving ANC Commissioner Phil Mendelson
We are a week away from our panel discussion with early ANCs to learn about what it was like to serve on ANCs over the past 50 years. Moderated by @maustermuhle in the MLK Jr. Library Auditorium @dcpl. Join us for this free event 6/12 @ 6 pm.
On this date in 2017, Jim Graham left us, far too soon. We miss his passion, his wit, his character, and his panache. He made a profound impact on Ward 1, the District, the region, and the nation. He is sorely missed.
On this date in 1878, Congress gave us the form of government we’d have during our nearly 100 years *without* Home Rule:
3 presidentially-appointed/Senate-confirmed commissioners (2 civilians & 1 military), with Congress serving as the District's legislature...sigh! #DCStatehood
