Descript Changelog: Hackathon Telethon Updates, ElevenLabs V3 Tone Direction, Underlord Improvements & New Effects
We had a two-day May hackathon “telethon,” where the team livestreamed builds, fulfilled 70 bugs and feature requests in 48 hours, and raised $14,000 for the Sierra Club, with more changes rolling out over the summer.
Updates include transitions that remember last-used settings, an option to restore the classic color theme, an always-on credits and media minutes meter, and bullet points in text clips.
@ElevenLabs V3 speakers now support inline tone direction (e.g., whispers, laughs, pauses, or custom prompts) that regenerates the surrounding paragraph.
Underlord adds persistent chat history per project, an automatic review step to rerun edits that miss the mark, and the @claudeai Opus 4.8 model in the picker.
The effects menu has been redesigned with 11 new effects, nine stylized looks, stackable effects, and gradient fills, and launches the Descript MCP connector in Claude and @ChatGPTapp marketplaces plus a CLI update

Lots of people asked how I used Fable to edit its own launch video so I made a video about that!
TLDR it wrote a lot of code & tool calls to use transcription services, ffmpeg, do colorgrading, use the figma mcp, make remotion UI and render it.
I didn't touch a video editor.

With all the AI tools it's so tempting for designers to just ship stuff and not learn about their codebase.
Why bother right? If there's a bug just prompt AI to fix it.
But this designer is instead using AI tools to generate high quality code so engineers spend less time reviewing his PR.

everyone's sleeping on how absurdly good 2026 is to start a company (even compared to 2024)
one person can now:
- ship full apps without engineers (cursor, replit)
- design without being a designer (v0, Claude Design)
- turn one video into 10 clips (opus, descript)
- push those clips to millions (X, Linkedin, TikTok)
- replace a support team (chatbase, intercom)
- literally watch exactly what their users do (Posthog)
- find target perfect leads on autopilot (origami)
This is such a rare window. I just can’t imagine it being this easy ever again

I think the challenge is that everyone can now build apps
But
1) almost nobody has distribution (like an audience), or
2) the money to pay for distribution (ads or UGC), or
3) the creative genius to get distribution for free (classically called guerilla marketing)

Agent instructions sound helpful, until your long-form podcast gets edited like a 30 second reel with jump cuts and flashy captions.
