Digg is seeing the first reaction wave land almost entirely negative: 97.9% negative across 22 sentiment-scored comments. The anger is over the blast radius: a foreign-access order turning into Fable 5 and Mythos 5 being removed for all customers. digg.com/tech/7lact4pt

Axios' @axiosalex and @m_ccuri reported the order as targeting foreign governments, companies and individuals. Anthropic says that narrow scope creates a broader shutdown: to comply, Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are being removed for all customers. digg.com/tech/7lact4pt

BREAKING: @AnthropicAI says the US government has issued an export control directive suspending access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for foreign nationals. That includes foreign-national Anthropic employees, whether they are inside or outside the US...
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

Anthropic says the directive cites national security authorities. The key detail: this is not just a customer restriction. Anthropic says some of its own employees are covered too. How far should AI export controls reach?

The directive is aimed at access by foreign nationals, including foreign-national Anthropic employees. But Anthropic says the compliance burden makes the practical outcome much bigger: Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are being removed for all customers.

The controls include department budgets and token tracking tools. That's the friction: Meta is selling an AI future built on abundance while managing usage internally like a scarce resource. Digg has the ranked voices and reaction here: digg.com/tech/2pxk2bay
