Japan players paid tribute to their captain Wataru Endo who withdrew from the World Cup and retired from international football due to injury.
The team hung his shirt on the bench during the game before carrying it onto the pitch at full-time against the Netherlands to ensure he was with them every step of the way ❤️🇯🇵
As a FIFPRO Global Player Council member, Wataru recently spoke openly about his recovery journey and the mental toll serious injuries can take on players.
Missing a World Cup through injury is one of the cruellest experiences a player can face. They spend their entire careers working towards this moment, only for it to be taken away in an instant.
