Today 128 guards in Dublin & Waterford will be armed with tasers - a fundamental shift in policing without any public consultation. ICCL is deeply concerned at the speed with which tasers have been introduced & An Garda's approach to "piloting" new tech. iccl.ie/news/taser-pilot-dan…

It's just 16 days since the media first reported the Justice Minister's plans to introduce tasers. Running this taser pilot alongside the ongoing body-worn camera pilot is poor research practice - it will confuse any results and prevent the necessary robust evaluation.

πŸ“’ @ICCLtweet warns of the dangers of giving Tasers to historically unarmed Irish police: "Tasers are not an effective de-escalation tool in all situations. International evidence shows they can escalate a situation, particularly when people are experiencing mental health crises"

INCLO member @ICCLtweet says the pilot project to arm frontline police with Tasers (a so-called "less lethal" weapon) is being deployed with little evidence or explanation, and could turn into a permanent roll-out without any independent assessment rte.ie/news/2025/1202/154687…

Yesterday, TJ McIntyre of @DRIalerts and ICCL told the Justice Committee that sections of the National Cyber Security Bill would give the National Cyber Security Centre powers that go beyond what is required under the NIS2 Directive, which Ireland is obliged to transpose. (1/14)

Finally, watch @DRIalerts recommend to the committee that, moving forward, the sections of the Bill that are not required under NIS2 should be dropped to allow for the straightforward transposition of NIS2 and then the State can consider what else is necessary. (14/14)
