I see this narrative getting spun and it doesn’t reflect my thoughts at all. We were discussing a hypothetical scenario. DG was building it up and leaning into a broader discussion on theatrics and optics, but most of all this was within the context of work, leadership, and execution. No where did I say I didn’t have respect. In fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Watch the full pod and you’ll see me defend him, give sound advice, and root for him. But the truth doesnt sell the way these clips do.
Devin Gardner hits on something interesting here when talking about Underwood in that MSU game - “The game is being one in spite of you…” Jake Butt then says he would lose respect if DG did what he did in that game. I wonder, did he lose respect for BU, and did the fanbase?

No one is immune from criticism, especially when you’re making millions and millions of $$$$. But let’s not sit here and say the verdict is out on any underclassman player ever. I got soooo much better as a sophomore from a freshmen. Then even more so going into my Jr season. By senior year I was chasing edges.. trying to get 5-10% better. For Bryce, it’s just about asking the simple question at the end of every day, “Did I improve as a quarterback today?” Do that enough times, and play will improve while the win column fills up.
The biggest strides you take as a player are during your younger years. Bryce Underwood was 17 when he stepped on campus. He’s 18 now. I’m certain he knows that growth needs to happen, but the discourse around his game has gotten out of control. If/ when he shows clear and major improvement this year, I hope there is equal praise to the noise we’ve seen.

I love how much Wemby cares. I love how much he shows it. It’s organic, real, and refreshing. He will make over a billion $$ in his career, but one of the things that makes him special is that childlike joy and passion to win. So fun to watch.

A few days/ weeks ago there was some NBA discourse about some stars/ players/ teams not caring about winning. Compare that with how the spurs played last night and all series and it’s so easy to see what a championship standard looks like. Spurs may be young, but led by Wemby, they play extremely hard and mostly smart basketball. Easy to root for and fun to watch.

Spurs play so aggressive on defense, to the point of nearly injuring their opponent, only to turn around and flop, foul bait, and dive on offense. I can’t believe my eyes and can’t believe it’s been rewarded.

That was NOT a shooting motion on SGA. He legit jumped sideways to create contact. Thought the NBA did away with rewarding that????

Did some research this morning on playoff performance in the full NIL Portal era (23-present) v the same number of playoff games before “Everyone was paying players before” is a wildly oversimplified false equivalence. Argue amongst yourselves

Watching Wemby right now must feel exactly how it felt for people to watch young LeBron. It’s just different. This feels like we’re all witnessing Wemby take that next step in real time. What a shot! What a game!

Probably would include the guy that had to come back from dow 3-1 to the 73-9, greatest team ever, warriors with 2 games on the road. That finals series is a bigger challenge than most mentioned on this list.

Imagine how we’d view the NBA if we built the players up when opportunities present themselves. There is no major media push to highlight the toughness of these players in this example. Far bigger pushes to knock down the modern players.
If you think nostalgia doesn’t exist in the NBA just remember that we glorify Michael Jordan having the flu in the playoffs, but we’ll forget very quickly that Joel Embiid is out there gutting it out with an open wound after just being in the hospital, and Cade is struggling to breathe at his full capacity after a recently collapsed lung. This generation is “soft” though, I guess…

The Broncos got the steal of the draft in RB Jonah Coleman. You’ll love him as player, but even more as a person. Great runner, vision, feel for cut backs, but also great in pass pro. Catches the ball well. NFL starter
