Proponents citing "owners have a right to make a viable income from their property as their primary asset." No, they don't. There is no "right" to income as a homeowner. Property is, primarily, to *house* people.

[1 of 3] Sharing sketchnotes I made during the California #Neurotechnology Conf, hosted at @ucdavis on April 28th. The first set is from a talk by Nathan Copeland, who holds the record for longest wearing of a #BCI:

[2 of 3] The second set is from the closing keynote by neuroscientist and entrepreneur @davideagleman, who spoke about revolutionizing the way we experience the world by creating new senses for humans.

[3 of 3] Finally, I had a few people at the conference ask how #UX can intersect with the #neurotech space, so I'll share this piece I wrote a few years ago, which has my personal view on this question: kryshiggins.com/ux-bcis/

If chat popups on websites weren't bad enough in terms of annoying new users and blocking content, is this perhaps the worst design for them ever? #onboarding #darkpatterns

If onboarding was charted as a bell curve between performance (value realization) and stress (friction), it might look something like this. @kryshiggins presents an interesting framework to help you strike the right balance for your user onboard. Source: kryshiggins.com/optimal-onbo…

Went outside and did some thunder painting today, which is when I listen to a storm roll in while throwing down some #watercolor. Here's one minute of ambient storm sounds:

We now have a total of 62 co-sponsors—Democrats & Republicans—for the Kids Online Safety Act. This overwhelming bipartisan support mirrors the powerful calls from young people & parents who want Congress to take action & finally hold Big Tech accountable.

If you are not following the more academic debate on Sora, beyond what it does as a movie maker, you may want to read this thread The current discussion is whether Sora is secretly a simulator, not merely a maker of movies. This would have pretty big implications for AI, if true

If you think OpenAI Sora is a creative toy like DALLE, ... think again. Sora is a data-driven physics engine. It is a simulation of many worlds, real or fantastical. The simulator learns intricate rendering, "intuitive" physics, long-horizon reasoning, and semantic grounding, all by some denoising and gradient maths. I won't be surprised if Sora is trained on lots of synthetic data using Unreal Engine 5. It has to be! Let's breakdown the following video. Prompt: "Photorealistic closeup video of two pirate ships battling each other as they sail inside a cup of coffee." - The simulator instantiates two exquisite 3D assets: pirate ships with different decorations. Sora has to solve text-to-3D implicitly in its latent space. - The 3D objects are consistently animated as they sail and avoid each other's paths. - Fluid dynamics of the coffee, even the foams that form around the ships. Fluid simulation is an entire sub-field of computer graphics, which traditionally requires very complex algorithms and equations. - Photorealism, almost like rendering with raytracing. - The simulator takes into account the small size of the cup compared to oceans, and applies tilt-shift photography to give a "minuscule" vibe. - The semantics of the scene does not exist in the real world, but the engine still implements the correct physical rules that we expect. Next up: add more modalities and conditioning, then we have a full data-driven UE that will replace all the hand-engineered graphics pipelines. openai.com/sora
