I truly love the replies to this which mainly consist of accounts saying “how can you expect our future head of state to go…to a *state* school?!”
Great to see another firmly modernising move from the Royal Family

A) So many state schools are fantastic B) Perhaps our future head of state should have an education akin to his future subjects. Might be quite helpful. C) If they’re not good enough- make. them. better.

Obviously, state schools generally can't compete with independents on facilities, music/arts, and social networking. But in terms of academics: curriculum and Teaching and Learning...our state schools can compete with any schools in the world, even the ones that charge £30k .
Replying to @lewis_goodall
FYI- it’s not unusual at all in Scandinavia and the Netherlands for senior royals to attend state schools. What a statement it would be (as well as good for the future head of state) if the Windsors were to give it a try.

Excellent article.
Have written about how the social media ban might unravel quite quickly. That’s partly because of social media itself. We have a new part of our politics, one which governments have to deal and which this government largely hasn’t- the algorithmic veto. open.substack.com/pub/goodal…

Queen Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI, Elizabeth I, Charles III were all described as “modernisers”, just as Prince William is now. The reality continues to be jarringly different from the PR.

Keir Starmer has just sent a message - from the G7 - to Andy Burnham that he can surrender any hope that he will walk away from being prime minister in any kind of smooth or orderly transfer of power. These are his on-camera words “So very many times on my political journey people have said to me ‘it's not possible.’ They said it's not possible to turn the Labour Party around, it’s not possible to win an election, it’s not possible if you do win an election to invest in your public services and stabilise the economy. Wrong every time. And that's why I intend not to walk away from this, but to carry on with what I was elected to do, which is to serve this country and bring back the change that people desperately need in their lives.”

The right claim the left see everything through the prism of race. Increasingly, the opposite is the case.
These were the six children to whom #C4News gave a platform this evening to share their views on the social media ban for under-16s. They were diverse, informed, and eloquent. But which group doesn't see themselves represented? Was the omission accidental or purposeful?

This policy a test of just how unpopular the govt has become and whether there is a compelling comms plan to sell it. Prohibition is hugely popular. So was digital ID. Plan likely to face full algorithmic force of tech companies. Might be a mistake to assume will stay that way.
We are banning social media access for under 16s. These days kids must find their feet in a world where technology intrudes into every area of their life. I just can’t let that go on anymore. So we’re giving children their childhoods back.
Community note
The UK Government's 'careful review' of the research found a small correlation between children's use of social media and wellbeing, but no evidence of a causal effect: gov.uk/government/pub… assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/696e0b46…

Lots of creditable ideas here, some of which will be welcomed. Political problems I can see -Face ID/digital IDs required. How onerous will this be for adults? Could be weaponised as “digital ID by backdoor”, will need firm political response which was not on offer when govt tried to introduce digital ID last year. -Demand for exemptions. Why ban YT? Has potential to be vastly educational, no DM facility/grooming function. Is basically like trying to ban television.
Keir Starmer announces social media ban for under-16s, saying it will make them happier and safer * The ban will include Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X. It will *not* include messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal. YouTube Kids and Google Classroom will also be exempt * The ban will extend to 'harmful functions' such as livestreaming and the ability to contact strangers. It will also apply to gaming sites. Starmer says this will make it 'world-leading' * The government is looking at overnight curfews and 'breaks in infinite scrolling' for those aged 16 to 18. It plans to set out more detail in July * It will be enforced using Face ID age verification and digital IDs * Says ban will come into force by the Spring of next year - ministers will use secondary legislation to push it through. 'It will make our children safer, it will make our children happier, it will give them more time, more security, more freedom to grow up, more opportunity' * Starmer acknowledged that children will try to use VPNs to find a way around it, as they have gone in Australia. Not clear what the government would do about this, but he says the argument is ridiculous - teenagers always try to get round laws re drinking but it doesn't mean we don't ban harmful activity * Starmer says he does not anticipate that there will be an issue with Donald Trump, despite his opposition to the ban thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

As I say, this is going to be a real communications test for the government. Conspiracy is going to spread very, very quickly- with some extremely powerful actors propelling it.
This censorship law is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The real goal is to enable the UK government to track everyone.

Josh MacAllister on the lunch time round showing again why he's easily one of the most impressive MPs of the new intake. Whether you approve or disapprove of the ban today, much of the legwork, pushing and thinking behind it within Labour's ranks has been down to him.
