This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As the daughter of a World War II Coast Guard Veteran, I grew up understanding the deep sense of duty, sacrifice, and love of country carried by so many military families. Today, we remember those who died on the battlefield, and the Veterans we lost after returning home. While our gratitude can never repay the sacrifices they made, we must continue to honor our Vets by fighting for the support they need and deserve. I will continue fighting that fight.

We are closely monitoring the chemical tank crisis in Orange County. The Los Angeles Fire Department has confirmed that Los Angeles is not affected and there is no risk to the city. The LAFD remains in close contact with the Orange County Fire Authority and Cal OES and is sending a Hazmat Specialist who will serve as a subject matter expert. The LAFD is on standby, ready to offer any further assistance and resources should they be needed. All Angelenos should avoid the area.

I applaud the Council for supporting my plan to hire more officers. When I took office, the LAPD was shrinking. Since day one, I’ve been fighting to recruit and hire more officers while also investing in prevention and intervention strategies that help keep communities safe. My budget for next year continues that commitment.

While the Sandy Fire is in Ventura County, the Los Angeles Fire Department continues to closely monitor the situation and has deployed resources on the ground – including strike teams, a hand crew, and helicopters – to assist local crews in firefighting efforts. At this time, we do not expect the wildfire to reach the City of Los Angeles. Out of an abundance of caution, LAFD has prepositioned resources in the San Fernando Valley and an Evacuation Warning has been issued for portions of West Hills and Chatsworth. Under an Evacuation Warning, residents are not required to leave immediately but are encouraged to be alert and be prepared to evacuate if conditions worsen and an Evacuation Order is issued. Residents in the San Fernando Valley may experience smoke this evening as it is carried in from the Sandy Fire. I am outraged and heartbroken by today’s shooting and murder at the Islamic Center of San Diego, especially as today marks the first day of Dhul Hijjah, a sacred and holy time for Muslims. Houses of worship must be true sanctuaries where hate and violence have no place. I stand firmly with the Muslim community and condemn this horrific attack. I have spoken with Muslim community leaders in Los Angeles to offer my assistance and have directed the LAPD to deploy additional resources to protect L.A.’s mosques.
