The Best Wealth Is What We Give Away “In another narration, Mutarrif relates from his father: ‘I came to the Holy Prophet (sa) while he was reciting, [Arabic – “Mutual rivalry in seeking worldly increase diverts you from God.”] The Holy Prophet (sa) then said: “The son of Adam says, ‘My wealth, my wealth.’ But, O son of Adam, your wealth is only that which you consumed by eating, wore out by using, or gave in charity and thereby sent ahead.”’ The Holy Prophet (sa) explained that while a person may consider all their possessions to be their wealth, the best wealth is that which is spent in charity, fulfilling the rights of God’s creation and spending in His cause. That wealth will be returned many times over in the hereafter. The Signs of a True Believer “Similarly, Hazrat Abu Bakr (ra) narrated that the Holy Prophet (sa) said: ‘A deceiver, a miser, and a person who constantly reminds others of his favours will not enter paradise.’ In another narration, Hazrat Abu Hurairah (ra) reported that the Holy Prophet (sa) said: ‘A believer is straightforward and generous, whereas a wicked person is deceitful and low in character.’ Here, ‘straightforward’ does not mean unintelligent. Rather, it means that a believer avoids unnecessary conflict, is noble, open-hearted, pleasant to be around, and respected. The Blessings of Generosity “Likewise, in relation to spending in the way of God Almighty and helping His servants, the Holy Prophet (sa) gave the following advice to the believers. Hazrat Asma (ra) relates that the Prophet (sa) said to me: ‘Do not keep your purse tightly closed. Open it, otherwise blessings will be withheld from you.’ The following words are found in another narration: ‘Do not keep counting it; otherwise Allah the Almighty will also give to you only in measured amounts.’ That is, if Allah the Almighty has blessed you, then you should do justice to expressing your gratitude towards Him by helping others. As a result, Allah the Almighty will give you even more. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (ra) reports that the Holy Prophet (sa) said: ‘A generous person is close to God, close to paradise, close to people, and far from the fire. Whereas a miserly person is far from God, far from paradise, far from people, and close to the fire. The Forbearance and Truthfulness of the Holy Prophet (sa)   Hazrat Abdullah bin Salam (ra) narrated that when Allah intended to guide Zaid bin Sa‘nah, Zaid said that he had recognised almost all the signs of prophethood in the face of the Holy Prophet (sa), except two qualities he still wished to test: that his forbearance would overcome harshness, and that harsh behaviour towards him would only increase him in patience. One day, a man came to the Holy Prophet (sa) asking for help for a village that had accepted Islam but was suffering from drought and hardship. Since nothing was left to give, Zaid offered to pay in advance for a fixed amount of dates, and the Holy Prophet (sa) accepted the arrangement. He then gave the money to that man and instructed him to use it to help the village.   Before the payment was due, Zaid came to the Holy Prophet (sa), grabbed his clothes harshly, and demanded repayment in a rude manner. Hazrat Umar (ra) became angry, but the Holy Prophet (sa) remained calm and said that both of them needed better advice: Umar should have advised him to repay well, and advised Zaid to demand politely. The Holy Prophet (sa) then ordered that Zaid be paid his due amount and given extra dates because Umar had frightened him. Zaid then told Hazrat Umar (ra) that he had only done this to test the remaining signs of prophethood, and now he had witnessed them. He accepted Islam, testified that Muhammad (sa) was the Messenger of Allah, and dedicated half of his wealth in charity for the Ummah of the Holy Prophet (sa).   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

A Cycle of Generosity and Kindness   It is narrated that Hazrat Uthman bin Affan (ra) once gifted a bunch of grapes, or fresh dates, to the Holy Prophet (sa). A beggar came, so the Holy Prophet (sa) gave it to him. When the beggar left, Hazrat Uthman (ra) met him, bought it back from him for one dirham, and then gifted it again to the Holy Prophet (sa). The beggar came again, and the Holy Prophet (sa) again gave it to him. Hazrat Uthman (ra) bought it back a second time and gifted it again. When this happened repeatedly, the Holy Prophet (sa) said to the beggar: “Are you a beggar, or are you a trader?”   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

The Blessed Impact of Generosity and Compassion   Hazrat Ibn Umar (ra) narrated that the Holy Prophet (sa) went to the market with ten dirhams and bought a shirt for four dirhams. As he came out wearing it, a man from the Ansar asked him for a shirt, praying that Allah may clothe him from the garments of Paradise. The Holy Prophet (sa) immediately took off that shirt and gave it to him, then returned and bought another shirt for four dirhams. With the two remaining dirhams, he helped a young girl who was crying because she had lost the money her family had given her. When she still feared being punished for returning late, the Holy Prophet (sa) personally walked with her to her family and explained the matter. Her family then freed her for the sake of Allah in honour of the Holy Prophet (sa) coming with her. The Holy Prophet (sa) said that he had never seen ten dirhams more blessed than these: Allah clothed His Prophet through them, clothed a man from the Ansar, and freed a soul through them.   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

The Selflessness and Generosity of the Holy Prophet (sa)   Hazrat Sahl bin Sa‘d (ra) narrated that a woman brought a woven cloak to the Holy Prophet (sa) and said: “I have woven this with my own hands so that you may wear it.” The Holy Prophet (sa), being in need of it, accepted it and came out wearing it. A man saw it and said: “How beautiful it is! Please give it to me to wear.” The Holy Prophet (sa) said yes, later folded it, and sent it to him. The companions told the man that he had not acted well, because the Holy Prophet (sa) had worn it while needing it, and he knew that the Holy Prophet (sa) never refused anyone who asked. The man replied that he had not asked for it to wear, but so that it may become his shroud. Hazrat Sahl (ra) said that it did become his shroud.   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

Excellence in Repayment and Generosity   Hazrat Abu Hurairah (ra) narrates that a man came to the Holy Prophet (sa) asking for repayment of what he had lent. The Holy Prophet (sa) repaid him more than the amount due, giving the extra from himself. The Immediate Distribution of Wealth in the Cause of Allah   It is narrated from Harun bin Ri’ab that seventy thousand dirhams were brought to the Holy Prophet (sa), and this was the largest amount of wealth ever brought to him. It was placed on a mat in the mosque. The Holy Prophet (sa) stood over it and distributed it, and he did not refuse anyone who asked until all of it was finished.   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

Fulfilment of Promises After the Holy Prophet (sa)   Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (ra) narrated that the Holy Prophet (sa) once said to him that if wealth from Bahrain came, he would give him generously from it. That wealth did not arrive until after the Holy Prophet (sa) had passed away. When the wealth from Bahrain later came, Hazrat Abu Bakr (ra) announced that whoever had a debt owed to him by the Holy Prophet (sa), or had been promised something by him, should come forward. Hazrat Jabir (ra) came and mentioned the promise of the Holy Prophet (sa). Hazrat Abu Bakr (ra) gave him a handful and told him to count it. It was five hundred, so Hazrat Abu Bakr (ra) told him to take two more amounts like it.   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

The Patience and Generosity of the Holy Prophet (sa)   ٍHazrat Abu Hurairah (ra) narrated that the Holy Prophet (sa) used to sit with the companions in the mosque and speak to them. When he stood up, they would also stand until they saw him enter one of the houses of his wives. One day, a Bedouin caught up with the Holy Prophet (sa), pulled his rough Najrani cloak so forcefully that his neck became red, and said: “O Muhammad, load these two camels of mine, for you are not giving me from your own wealth or from the wealth of your father.” The Holy Prophet (sa) said that he would not do so until the Bedouin allowed him to take recompense for the pull, but the Bedouin refused. The Holy Prophet (sa) showed patience, then called a man and instructed him to load one of the Bedouin’s camels with barley and the other with dates. He then said to the companions: “Go back with the blessing of Allah.”   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

The Forbearance of the Holy Prophet (sa)   Hazrat Anas bin Malik (ra) narrates that he was walking with the Holy Prophet (sa), who was wearing a Najrani cloak with a thick border. A Bedouin caught up with him and pulled his cloak so harshly that it left a mark on the Holy Prophet’s (sa) shoulder. The Bedouin then said: “O Muhammad, order that I be given from the wealth of Allah which is with you.” The Holy Prophet (sa) turned towards him, smiled, and then instructed that something be given to him.   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

Thoughtfulness of the Holy Prophet (sa)   Hazrat Miswar bin Makhramah (ra) narrates that his father, Makhramah (ra), heard that some cloaks had been brought to the Holy Prophet (sa). He asked his son to take him to the Holy Prophet (sa). When they arrived, Makhramah (ra) asked his son to go in and call the Holy Prophet (sa). The Holy Prophet (sa) then came out wearing one of those cloaks and said: “O Makhramah, I kept this one especially for you,” and he gave it to him.   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)

The Holy Prophet (sa) and the Spirit of Sacrifice   Hazrat Sahl bin Sa‘d (ra) narrates that a woman once brought a woven cloak to the Holy Prophet (sa) and said she had made it with her own hands so that he may wear it. The Holy Prophet (sa), being in need of it, accepted it and wore it. A man then saw it and said: “O Messenger of Allah, how beautiful it is! Please give it to me to wear.” The Holy Prophet (sa) agreed, later folded it, and sent it to him. When the companions expressed concern, the man explained that he had asked for it so it could serve as his shroud. Hazrat Sahl (ra) narrates that it later became his shroud.   (Friday Sermon, 12th June 2026)
