Until 2016, Google, Amazon, Facebook and other tech firms ranked among the most influential companies in Washington.
Their power peaked when President Obama took office in 2009. During his 2008 presidential campaign, then-Google chief Eric Schmidt help the Obama campaign design online systems to use the Internet to raise money for the campaign and track down voters on Election Day.
When Obama won the election, Schmidt was at his Chicago victory party; Obama later tapped the Google chief to serve on several government boards, including those with influence over crafting tech policy.
