Congressman Shomari Figures joined me live from the #AllRoadsLeadSouth rally in Montgomery, Alabama to discuss the ongoing fight over voting rights, gerrymandering, and the future of Black representation across the Deep South following the Supreme Court’s recent redistricting rulings. Congressman Figures spoke about the continued legal battle surrounding Alabama’s congressional map, the coordinated attacks on majority-Black districts, and why protecting fair representation is not just about politics, but about protecting democracy itself. As Republicans across several Southern states attempt to redraw maps and silence communities, we must remember that every gain in this country came because people organized, marched, prayed, and fought for it. #PoliticsNation

It’s not lost on me that we are here in Montgomery—the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement. The fight for fair representation is still going. The South got something to say and they will hear us.

I joined Chris Jansing on MS Now to talk about our continued fight for fair representation in the State of Alabama.

.@repscfigures may lose his seat when Alabama implements a new House map after the sudden ruling by the Supreme Court. "We are certainly on the cusp of returning to an era where Black people in the state of Alabama do not have a legitimate opportunity to have representation at every level of government," he tells @kasie.

.@repscfigures responded to the Supreme Court's decision to allow the Alabama GOP to use a new voting map for the midterms, eliminating the majority-Black district that elected him. In an interview with journalist Cody Short for The Root, Figures described his disappointment.

This is an incredibly unfortunate decision by the Supreme Court that not only continues their trend of breaking from the norms and precedents set by the Court, but also sets the stage for Alabama to go back to the 1950s and 60s in terms of Black political representation in the state. The conservative justices on the Supreme Court just literally substituted themselves in to be the defense lawyers for the State of Alabama. The Court just gave the state the benefit of an argument the Supreme Court acknowledged just a week ago that the State did not even present in defending its maps. This Supreme Court did not dismiss the case, so the litigation will certainly continue. My hope is that this is a temporary setback and that three-Republican appointed judges will again find what they found the first time: that the State of Alabama intentionally discriminated against Black voters in drawing its congressional district lines. I ran for this seat to be a voice for all of Alabama, and I'm not backing down from that mission now. The fight must and will go on. Beyond the courts, we know what has to be done. We will organize, we will register, and we will turnout people in record numbers at the polls.

Even as we continue the fight for fair representation in our state, I’m still showing up across the district to meet with constituents and learn about their needs and priorities so I can best represent our community in Congress.
