While the tear film provides a uniquely accessible and glycan-rich model system, the principles we uncover are broadly relevant to glycopeptide chemistry, protease specificity, and the design of peptide-based therapeutics.

This work opens the door to understanding how glycans, splicing, and protein assembly cooperatively shape immune and barrier function at the ocular surface. We envision this could help guide future therapeutic strategies in conditions like DED, where Gal-3 levels are dysregulated
