Group A is a good example of the different challenges teams are facing at this World Cup - with games in extreme heat, altitude & indoor venues. Take South Africa as an example. Game 1 vs Mexico in Mexico City - 2,200m altitude Game 2 vs Czechia in Atlanta - indoor, climate controlled conditions Game 3 vs South Korea in Monterrey - one of the hottest of all host cities Then a potential round of 32 tie could mean either another altitude test in Mexico City or an indoor fixture in Dallas. Also considering around 3,500km of travel between group games, alongside time zone changes & eastward travel that bring players' circadian rhythms into the equation. See the full piece from @PhilKO1 below - delving into the various factors in consideration for practitioners in camp, and what they might be doing about it.
As teams from all over the world arrive in the United States, Mexico & Canada, anticipation is building for the 2026 World Cup. For practitioners involved with each of the 48 teams, this is key preparation time. Within this World Cup however, there is a little more to consider than usual. From afternoon kick-offs in 30°, to competing at over 2,200m above sea level in Mexico City, to crossing multiple time zones between matches - teams will face a unique combination of environmental demands throughout the tournament. The challenge for practitioners will be understanding how these stressors accumulate across the tournament and what that means for preparation, recovery and performance. Having dealt with similar challenges year in year out within the MLS, FC Cincinnati Director of Sports Science @PhilKO1 explores some of the key considerations for practitioners ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup - read the full article below.

Nice little example of how our Sonra Watch app is used in 1-2-1 conditioning sessions, providing real-time data feedback during or directly after the session. - 24 metrics - 8 players tracked simultaneously - connected via Bluetooth statsports.com/article/sonra… 📹 @Traainer_

Potentially on this run, he hit the fastest speed of the tournament so far. Bale-esque.

Before a ball had even been kicked, one of the stories of the 2026 World Cup had already been written. Curaçao are the smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament - a small island just 40 miles off the coast of Venezuela, home to around 156,000 people; roughly the population of Blackpool, or County Wicklow. Yet they earned their place on football's biggest stage by finishing top of their qualifying group. We're proud to have supported Curaçao and their performance staff, headed up by @AngeloCijntje, since before their qualification last year. Coordinating a squad drawn from 25 clubs across 10 countries brings its challenges - making their preparation and performance all the more impressive. Their World Cup journey begins today against Germany, no less. The Blue Wave weren't supposed to make it this far, why stop now..? 🌊

Unbelievable scenes. What a performance, what a result. All Ireland Quarter-Final 🔜 @louthgaa
🔴 LOUTH GOAL ⚪️ A goal at the death for Louth! As the clock ticks past 70 minutes, the Wee County book their place in the quarter-finals with a dramatic late strike 🏐🔥⏰ It's heartbreak for Armagh, whose journey to the last eight must now take the long route through Round 3 💔 @louthgaa @Armagh_GAA #LOUvARM

Have done since 2022. Which you can still access. Great to compare the physical outputs from both tournaments.

How does altitude have an impact on the physical performance of players at this World Cup? A small sample size, tactical nuances etc, but, compared to the opening game of Qatar 2022: 📉 13% less high-intensity running (15 km/h) 📉 12% less Zone 3 running (15-20 km/h) 📉 12% less Zone 4 running (20-25 km/h) 📉 21% less Zone 5 running (>25 km/h) 🇲🇽🇿🇦 Mexico vs South Africa (2,200m): 34.5 km at speeds above 15 km/h. 🇶🇦🇪🇨 Qatar vs Ecuador (sea level): 38.9 km comparatively. Are teams who play with a high intensity/high press style at a disadvantage at altitude?

As the Super Rugby season reaches the business end, the Blues are once again right in the mix. Earlier this year we spoke to Blues' Sports Scientist Bianca Koper about some of the challenges she faces in her role day to day. One area Bianca touched on was the introduction of New Zealand Rugby's Wider Training Group initiative, which allows up to 12 additional players to train alongside the main squad as part of their development pathway. Brilliant for player development, but it also increases the demands placed on performance staff - more players to monitor, more sessions to manage, more data to process. In this clip, Bianca explains how the performance staff have adapted to those demands, and where they've been able to create efficiencies within their workflow - from managing larger groups more effectively, to monitoring more athletes live during training, to streamlining the way data is collected and processed. Especially in sports like rugby, where squad sizes are bigger, creating efficiencies like these is just as important as the insights themselves.

Excellent read here from @HKhaliqueLoonat on the different factors impacting England's preparations heading into the World Cup. Perhaps the most striking aspect, is the variance in load exposure across the squad this season. 5 players are entering the tournament in the 'red zone', having increased their minutes by 30% compared to last season. At the same time: - 8 players have over 4,000 minutes - 5 players have fewer than 2,500 minutes - 3 are returning from notable injury layoffs - Multiple carrying historical injury risk Also this season, the majority of the squad tend to accumulate above average load in high intensity metrics; HSR, sprint distance, accelerations. Adding in the various environmental factors, travel & short turnaround times, there's a lot for performance staff to consider. As Tuchel himself noted, some players will need to be "topped up", while others require more recovery focus - highlighting the importance of individualised monitoring in the lead up to & throughout the tournament. Whoever comes out on top next month, you can be sure they will have gotten this balance right.

England are using our technology to provide real-time GPS data in-game at a World Cup for the first time ever. That’s only possible if you know how to read the data in context. The staff will have done their homework. FC Cincinnati’s Head of Sports Science @PhilKO1 explains why GPS numbers in Miami heat mean something completely different to the same numbers in Manchester in November. 🔗 statsports.com/article/why-t…

Speaking of individualised fitness, here’s as contextual as it gets from Argentina training with Leo Messi. A sprint-float-sprint style movement, over a shorter distance of approx 20-25m Replicates that highly effective speed up, slow down, speed up again burst Messi loves.

We think this is a very fair critique of the ‘viral’ French national team reconditioning session. Within the context of collective vs individualised fitness work… Ibrahima Konate probably doesn’t respond to a 10-minute block of interval runs in the same way as Malo Gusto. Ultimately, the question becomes: how do you condition large groups of players with different physical profiles at the same time? A short lead-in time with players arriving with different levels of fitness is difficult to manage.
