SpaceX showed a satellite 170 meters long this week. Starship is 124. The "AI Sat Mini" is bigger than the rocket designed to launch it. Many say orbital data centers are too ambitious. The economics are brutal, the engineering unsolved, the timeline a fantasy. They're not wrong about the constraint. They're wrong about the conclusion. A 1 GW orbital compute cluster needs roughly 4 km² of solar collection area. SpaceX's answer for now: 10,000 individual 100 kW satellites, each one fitting inside a fairing. Smart workaround but still a workaround. Musk himself closed his presentation with a video of future satellites being built on the Moon and launched by mass driver. He knows the current architecture has a ceiling. With in-orbit manufacturing, that ceiling disappears. You're no longer limited by what fits inside a rocket. You build where you operate. That's what we're working on at @_OrbitalMatter At that point, 1 GW isn't ambitious. It's just the starting point. #spacedatacenters #inorbitmanufacturing #spaceinfrastructure #spacetech #AIinfrastructure Source: @SpaceNews_Inc

Executive summary: Davin Michaelis spent 25 years in special operations prior to joining us as a venture partner. In this piece, he urges Defense Tech companies to move beyond building in isolation and focus on real-world impact. He believes true value is proven at the modern “decisive point” of conflict, specifically Ukraine, where technology directly shapes battlefield outcomes.

Space data centers will happen - but only if we build what Earth cannot AI’s growth is now hitting the physical limits of Earth. OpenAI’s internal target of 250 GW by 2033 exceeds the electricity consumption of entire nations. And if that’s the trajectory, the real question becomes: Where do we put the next 250 GW of AI? Space suddenly looks like the only environment that truly scales: continuous solar power, a perfect radiative sink, and infinite real estate. But here’s the catch: multi-megawatt compute in orbit needs massive solar arrays and thousands of square meters of radiators. These aren’t “deployables” anymore. They’re industrial-scale structures far too large to launch, even on Starship. Which means the only viable path forward is clear: Build the infrastructure in orbit, not on Earth. This is why @_OrbitalMatter exists. We manufacture these systems directly in space - 100 meter booms, solar backbones, and radiator structures that never have to fit inside a rocket fairing. And this isn’t theoretical. It is the foundation of our technology roadmap: Printed booms → full deployable structures → 100m arrays and radiators → orbital infrastructure layer enabling space data centers. @OpenAI @SpaceX #SpaceDataCenters #InOrbitComputing #SpaceTech #SpaceInnovation

--> @NATO DIANA accelerates dual-use startups for the Alliance. I’ve joined as a mentor. Last week was our cohort kick-off in Riga. I especially enjoyed the exchange with the many active military personnel who participated. With an acceptance rate below 5%, getting into this program was highly selective for the startups.

NEW INVESTMENT: EU Motors develops European-made drone motors. This is mission-critical if the West wants any economic or military leverage in the future. The reality today: We are almost 100% dependent on Chinese drone parts. Michael Berger and his team are highly execution-focused and understand what Europe needs from its critical technology manufacturers today. They are developing reliable and scalable BLDC drone motors (the standard type of electric motors used in drones). Both development and manufacturing take place in Poland. This is where Molecule.one comes in. This partnership marks the first deployment of an AI platform designed specifically for large-scale chemical manufacturing. We aren't just simulating; we are tackling the supply chain bottleneck directly.

NEW INVESTMENT: Sky Spy turns electromagnetic chaos into a clear, actionable picture to help dominate the battlefield. Its battle-proven, portable signals-intelligence system turns drones into agile spectrum hunters (to detect, classify, and geolocate hostile emitters in real time). It’s amazing what Arsenii and the rest of the team have already built in stealth. They combine combat veterans, technologists, and entrepreneurs. We’ve been waiting to announce this one for a while. We’re excited to co-invest alongside Freedom Fund, Crosscourt Ventures, and Material Ventures, and to welcome Expeditions and Superangel to round out the round. You can learn more here: skyspy.ai

Venture capital & unicorns: I had the pleasure of sharing my thoughts and experiences on venture capital at the University of Potsdam. Thanks for the invite, @BastianHalecker! Fittingly, the Museum Barberini currently has a special exhibition dedicated to the unicorn. Long before it became a startup icon, this mythical creature played a prominent role in various religions and cultures for centuries. Worth a visit!

🚀Big Space Tech Expo Report: Our partner @TheMadMan and five of our portfolio companies spent two exciting days at @SpaceTechExpoEU in Bremen. The event made one thing very clear: Europe’s space industry has left the “science fair” phase. The conversation has shifted to hard power, hard tech, and hard revenue. (1) Space is now openly treated as critical defence and infrastructure. From secure comms and ISR to resilient navigation, satellites are no longer “nice to have”, they’re the nervous system of European security and industry. (2) The “small” in smallsats is only about form factor. The real question on everyone’s mind: who can put meaningful capability into orbit fast, reliably, and without torching a balance sheet? Constellations, rideshare economics, and new launch capacity in Europe were constant hallway topics. (3) AI and downstream applications have moved from buzzword to business. Operators want autonomy and margins, and customers want products not pixels. From tasking to anomaly detection to climate and infrastructure intelligence, AI-native space companies are suddenly the adults in the room. (4) A fourth theme is quietly emerging: Harnessing energy in space. High-power platforms, mega-arrays, and the building blocks of future space data centers. Portfolio companies present were: @asynchronics, @zaitra_io, @lifterospace, SI Robotics, and @_OrbitalMatter. You can find their company-specific learnings and updates in the comments.

--> @lifterospace embodied the “smallsats” theme: propulsion that lets operators do more with every kilogram they put into orbit. At Bremen, the team showcased their flight-proven propulsion system and hit exactly the right chord with the market. Dozens of new leads entered the pipeline, and the feedback consistently highlighted Liftero’s competitive edge in performance and reliability for NewSpace constellations. For us, the event served as a live validation that Liftero’s product is aligned with how both commercial and defence customers now think about access to orbit: smaller, faster, and much more manoeuvrable in an increasingly congested and contested environment.

--> @_OrbitalMatter was a direct play on the emerging theme of “harnessing energy in space”. Conversations at the event confirmed a clear shift in target customers: companies building large solar arrays (5–20 kW), high-power satellites, and massive deployable structures such as antennas (e.g. HPS GmbH). Orbital Matter is now focused on high-power missions (>5 kW) limited by stowed volume, a constraint they effectively remove with their structures. Attendees singled out their high power density, stiffness, modal frequency, large deployable size, customizable boom geometry, and shorter lead times. This resonated strongly with potential targets from space data centers and energy (Axiom, Redwire Space, TAS, Momentus) to mega-constellation solar array buyers (Airbus, DHV, Beyond Gravity, Rivada/Terran Orbital, Indra).
