🦞’s conquer the volleyball world! We defeated the Elkin lab’s team earlier this afternoon - great job to the whole team! To a month of sport events following the kick-off World Cup ⚽️ match today!
Last week, we had the annual group dinner @ChartHouseRest at the Long Wharf in Seaport to celebrate a successful year for the team. Photos to follow, but we have a new group photo to share with you all first!
Kudos to Jesús and Benedikt for their excellence in mentorship and contribution to the Swager lab! What an awesome time to be a part of the lobster team (or Mantis shrimps?)! 🦞🦐🍤
Congratulations to the extraordinary winners of the Spring 2026 Mentorship Spotlight Award: Rad Chrzanowski, Dr. Jesus Castro Esteban, Wenlai Han, Ira Martyniak, Rachel Motz, Dr. Benedikt Schreib, and Madelyn Scott.

We are back with a great news from PolyJoule, an MIT spinout headquartered in Billerica, MA, found by Prof. Ian Hunter and our very own boss! Basically, a battery that you can put a blow torch to, and it won't burn! Check the details below 👇

🍻🥩: Yesterday, several of the 🦞’s went out for a dinner to send our best wishes to Hayeon Kim, an exchange Ph.D. student from @KAIST_CBE. We wish her all the best in her upcoming journey, and hopefully she had many great memories with the lab members!
📰: Our recent publication in @JACS_Au introduces a new method to functionalize PFA coil reactors with different photocatalysts through fluorophilic interactions, which can help configure flow reactors for reactions on scale. Congrats to Benedikt, Jesús, and @AFResearchLab team!
🆕 labmate: A late introduction, but we warmly welcome Dr. Yuki Hata who's from Nagoya, 🇯🇵. He got his B.S. from Yokohama National University and his Master's from @UTokyo_News_en before working for Nippon Steel and getting his Ph.D. from @NagoyaUniv concurrently. Stay tuned!
🆕 lab member: We welcome Dr. Davide Zanetti, who recently joined our lab as a FWF postdoc fellow! He obtained his BSc and then MSc from @unito/@icmabCSIC and then PhD from @univienna. He will explore redox-active organic systems and magneto-optical materials soon. Stay tuned!
It is wonderful to finally showcase our collaboration with @SwagerGroup and @jesswade on the Faraday rotation of chiral organic polymers. See our preprint. doi.org/10.26434/chemrxiv-20…. For an explainer thread, check out the other place (🟦☁️). Well done to all authors!
🍎🍏🍂: Last weekend, our lab members went to Honey Pot Hill Orchards, just ~45 minutes of driving away from the lab, to enjoy some apple cider donuts and freshly picked apples! Presented below are beautiful pictures from Ming's camera, and stay tuned for more beautiful photos!
🖼️'s from the award ceremony! @ColletteGordon9, a NOBCChE collaborative student representative, and Jennifer represented MIT at the Graduate School Fair at the NOBCChE conference. FYI, Tim serves as MIT faculty representative. Also, a nice reunion with former MSRP alumnus Arinze!
🫡: A belated post, but we are happy to celebrate our group members presenting at the NOBCChE conference last month! @ColletteGordon9 and Jennifer represented our group while reuniting with @KaylaStorme, Andy, and Eric. Collette earned 1st Place in the NSF Innovation Tank Talk!
From explosives to ketones, all the way to PFAS, ethylene, and finally hydrogen sensing, the story of chemiresistors and biosensors in our lab still continues until today. Reunion with our alumni @RichrdLiu & @lennon_luo@HarvardCCB and a group photo in front of a group picture!
📣: Tim gave the Max Tishler Prize Lecture today @HarvardCCB and got the medallion from our alumnus (and now a faculty member in the Department’s next door to us!) @RichrdLiu. In a breezy day in Cambridge, we got together with our colleagues to listen to Tim’s exciting story 🎉!
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2025 #NobelPrize in Chemistry to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi “for the development of metal–organic frameworks.”
📜🚨: New paper coming to your area! In this work, Daniel showcases an efficient synthesis of FOPCOT, which can be used as organic Faraday rotators. Thank you to our collaborators at @UBChemistry, Molly for her computation, @Bergy_Dunitz, and Peter at XRD! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jac…
