This dust storm rolled into Tempe during last year's monsoon season. Arizona's monsoon season begins June 15 and continues through Sept. 30. Monsoon storms can bring dust storms, lightning, strong winds, heavy rain and flash flooding, often with little warning. A few important safety reminders: 🌵 Dust storms: If visibility drops, get indoors. If you're driving, pull off the roadway, put your vehicle in park, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake. ⚡ Lightning: If you hear thunder, move indoors immediately. Lightning can strike miles from a storm. 🚧 Flooded roads: Never drive through standing or moving water. Turn around and find another route. For additional safety tips, information about free sandbags, what to do if a tree falls and other monsoon resources, visit tempe.gov/Monsoon.

Mayor Woods is a self-professed foodie. So, when he heard that Wild BBQ was opening a permanent location, he had to check it out. Tender meats smoked to perfection and a myriad of side choices, your belly will thank you. Brothers Ahmad and Mo Abu Ghazal, and Mo’s wife Salsabil fell in love with barbecue in the depths of Dallas, Texas, after coming to the U.S. from Jordan. They relocated to the Grand Canyon State in 2019 and started Wild BBQ as a food truck business in 2023. They opened their brick-and-mortar location at University Drive and Roosevelt Street in December. Open Thursday-Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., but get there early if you want to try everything!

🚲Congrats to the 2026 Bike Hero – Nancy Puffer! 🚲 She is a dedicated volunteer with Bike Saviours, where she serves on the Board of Directors as Director of Art. Using discarded bicycle parts from the Bike Saviours scrap bin, Nancy creates original works of art, transforming old bicycle components into mirrors, jewelry, sculptures, decor, and one-of-a-kind statement pieces. Most impressively, Nancy donates 100% of the proceeds from these sales to Bike Saviours. Nancy is also the lead organizer of the annual RE:Cycle Art Night, benefiting Bike Saviours. This unique event unites the arts and cycling communities. For the past two years, Nancy has led this entirely volunteer-driven event, which has become one of Tempe's most creative grassroots community celebrations. Nancy truly embodies what it means to be a bike hero.

Proposed changes would: • Keep animals safe from extreme weather • Ensure veterinary care is provided to keep pets healthy • Require adequate shelter for dogs living outdoors • Allow police to rescue an animal believed to be in danger from a car The updates come through the Animal Welfare and Cruelty Council Subcommittee, led by Councilmember Berdetta Hodge, with Vice Mayor Doreen Garlid and Councilmember Jennifer Adams. Provide comment at the June 11 hearing at 6 p.m. at City Council Chambers. Learn more at bit.ly/4oeOUXx

These crayons melted in the back seat of a parked car. Imagine what that heat can do to a child or pet. With temperatures approaching 110° this week, remember that the inside of a vehicle can become dangerously hot in just minutes, even with the windows cracked. Look before you lock. Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle. If you see a child or pet in a hot vehicle, call 911 immediately.

Nobody expects to perform CPR. Until they have to. Most cardiac arrests don't happen in public places surrounded by strangers. They happen at home. The first person there is often a spouse, parent, child, friend or neighbor. Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person's chance of survival while professional help is on the way. The good news is that CPR is a skill anyone can learn. Tempe Fire Medical Rescue is now offering affordable CPR certification classes designed for beginners and taught by Tempe Fire captain paramedics. Classes are just $30 and include a short online learning component followed by an in-person, hands-on skills session. Learn CPR. Be ready. Register: tinyurl.com/TempeFireCPR
