Belfast after the 'beheading', by Aris Roussinos (@arisroussinos) The nightmare scenario for Sinn Féin would have been Catholics rioting against immigrants. That did not happen: instead, working-class Catholics merely turned out to watch their Protestant neighbours riot with an anthropological detachment newly devoid of open contempt. I have never until now heard working-class Catholics, from devoutly Republican areas, talking about the coming together of the ‘Orange and the Green’ with anything other than derision. At Ardoyne Roundabout, one of North Belfast’s most volatile sectarian interface areas, protestors from both communities shook hands and declared amity in scenes that were genuinely startling. Russell T Davies is stuck in a purity spiral, by Julie Burchill (@BoozeAndFagz) The Purity Police are the merciless overseers of the Purity Spirals, and that’s just what Davies has got himself into with Willoughby. In the past a PS was known as “infighting”, which has always been so much worse on the Left, where politics takes the role of religion. Purity Spirals are so out-there cray-cray that one of the most famous centred on an Instagram knitting circle run by a gay man who became the victim of a race-row pile-on after he attempted to recruit more people of colour by using the hashtag Diversknitty; he was accused of white supremacy and ended up in hospital on suicide watch. A sophisticate once told me that if you sit at a pavement cafe on the Via Veneto long enough, you will see everyone you know. It was probably an exaggeration — but I do think it true that if you stay on X long enough, you will have a bust-up with India Willoughby. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/gHgmNcQ

The queer threat to gay pride, by Andrew Sullivan (@sullydish) Within the gay and lesbian world, the policing of even mild dissent is oppressive. What I disagree with is a new, hard-Left, genderqueer political agenda — which has nothing to do with gays and lesbians at all, except that it actually endangers LG children with gender dysphoria, and threatens women’s rights as well. I don’t have the slightest problem with people calling themselves queer and innovating whatever lifestyles they want. God bless them. I simply have a problem saying that 6% should define and brand the other 94% of relative normies. Some truly ugly forces have seized on this own-goal by the queers to ramp up real hatred of gays and trans people. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/m3Zq8oo

Without a clear majority — without a kind of social regency, which needn’t be racial — we end up with what one California historian called the “Blade Runner scenario”: “the fusion of individual cultures into a demotic polyglotism ominous with unresolved hostilities” characterised by regular outbreaks of violence followed by “negotiated truce”. Weekend Essay: Sohrab Ahmari on America's diversity stress.

The indignity of Gaudí Lego, by Wessie du Toit (@wessiedutoit) The irony of Gaudí’s legacy is that his genius is exalted by a world he would have abhorred. He was, at least from the midpoint of his life, every bit the otherworldly eccentric that one hopes a great artist to be: deeply conservative in his views (though defiant against the rule of Catalonia from Madrid), exuberantly original in his work, stubborn and fanatical in his temperament. Yet Gaudí’s buildings, reduced like Nefertiti or the Mona Lisa to the status of t-shirt and keyring-fodder, have helped to turn the city he saw as the sacred heart of the Catalan nation into a tourist trap. The Sagrada Família, initially funded by the donations of the devout, was brought to completion with the revenues of the tourist industry. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/2KML68l

Can Cuba resist America?, by Ioan Grillo (@ioangrillo) It could at least be argued that the Cuba of the late-20th century could have been a viable alternative model to capitalism – and the enchanting island still sits in the heart of many in the international left as being the home of brave bearded revolutionaries. But the broken Cuba of today is a world away from that, and foreigners who still promote it as an example of functioning socialism are often projecting a fantasy. While some Cubans say it’s already at rock bottom, the cruel reality is that things can always get worse. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/8kQp6pY

Belfast’s political faultline, by Gerry Lynch (@gerrylynch) The idea that Nationalists are on the Left and Unionists on the Right is already pretty deeply rooted in Northern Ireland. Sinn Féin seems to be both ideologically committed to a pro-immigration stance and believes it will reap long-term rewards in a region where the balance of power between the two traditional ethno-sectarian blocs is held by ethnic minorities and detribalised bourgeois liberals. Yet survey data shows that Catholics are only marginally more supportive of immigration than Protestants in Northern Ireland. The potential for a backlash, then, within Northern Ireland Nationalism to the pro-migration approach of its leaders is very real. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/QZY2PA8

Spencer Pratt: Hollywood troll, by Frederick Kaufman (@FredericKaufman) From his earliest days in reality TV, Pratt has understood that the fast track to success was to wage war against a fake foe like David Foster. In his run for the mayoralty of Los Angeles, he has created a similar kind of illusory enemy out of Hollywood’s liberal establishment. No matter that it’s dead and gone. Its ghost will do. As every executive producer knows, there’s nothing quite as terrifying as a ghost. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/msxnF6G

Belgium: Europe’s Pimp City, by Julie Bindel (@bindelj) Belgium's new prostitution laws now put women at more risk. One clause in the legislation stipulates that if a prostitute refuses 10 sex acts or individual clients, the brothel owner can make a complaint about her. To date, there have been no cases in which a “brothel worker” has been granted sick leave, maternity pay, or taken a case against a brothel manager to an employment tribunal. This is where the logic of legislation leads: Belgium has contrived to empower every one of its pimps and open up unparalleled choice for the male sexual consumer. What it hasn’t done, anywhere it has been applied, is improve the lives of women whose “work” makes any of this possible. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/AGtVVvo

Whether NI’s Nationalists can continue to take an almost entirely unfinessed pro-immigration line & how small but rapidly growing ethnic minority communities will engage with Nationalism & Unionism traditions, are two of NI politics’ biggest imponderables. unherd.com/2026/06/belfasts-…

Von der Leyen is coming for Europe’s wallet, by Thomas Fazi (@battleforeurope) If the Commission deems a government non-compliant with the rule of law — as understood, of course, by Brussels — funds cannot simply be frozen; they can be redirected to civil-society organisations and “European values” programmes approved by the Commission itself. This amounts to the creation of a system of permanent EU-managed political pressure. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/wKQePmh
