University of Toledo astronomers are advancing our understanding of a star’s earliest stages of development — and creating stunning images along the way. Dr. Tom Megeath, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, is the principal investigator on the observation program that yielded the European Space Agency’s James Webb Space Telescope Picture of the Month in June. The image depicts a star-forming cloud of gas and dust in the constellation Orion. bit.ly/4unhfwh

What does it take to restore an iconic Great Lakes species? 🐟 Researchers and students at The University of Toledo are helping reestablish a self-sustaining population of lake sturgeon in the Maumee River and western Lake Erie through a collaborative, long-term restoration effort. The work is part of the broader research mission of UToledo's Lake Erie Center, where faculty and students study the environmental challenges shaping freshwater ecosystems — from invasive species and algal blooms to water quality and fisheries restoration. By investigating local conditions, UToledo researchers are generating insights that help protect the Great Lakes and inform conservation efforts far beyond our region. Today, on National Higher Education Day, we celebrate the power of public universities to transform lives, strengthen communities and fuel what comes next. As part of Ohio’s 14 public universities, The University of Toledo is proud to help prepare the educators, engineers, scientists, healthcare professionals and business leaders our state needs to grow and thrive. That work happens every day — through experienced-based learning, research and discovery as an R1 university, patient-centered care through UToledo Health and partnerships that turn ideas into impact for northwest Ohio and beyond. Across Ohio, public universities power a $68 billion economy, support 865,000 jobs and create opportunity in every corner of the state. At UToledo, we’re proud to be part of that momentum — building pathways for students, advancing solutions for our communities and helping shape a stronger future for Ohio. #NationalHigherEducationDay | whycollegematters-oh.org/

New research from The University of Toledo and the University of Missouri found that goldfish released or escaped into the wild can dramatically disrupt freshwater ecosystems — degrading water quality, harming native species and altering aquatic food webs. myut.link/cfccc1 Published in the Journal of Animal Ecology, the study provides some of the first rigorous experimental evidence that no freshwater ecosystem appears immune to the impacts of invasive goldfish. Goldfish may be great pets, but they belong in aquariums — not lakes, rivers or ponds.

UToledo Health orthopaedic resident Dr. Jacob Alexander took a weeklong vacation this spring, not to relax on the beach, but to perform hip and knee replacements for those who are less fortunate. Alexander traveled to Antigua, Guatemala, as a part of Team Hope in Motion, a surgical missions initiative partnered with the nonprofit Faith in Practice. Over the course of the week, the team performed 105 procedures on 100 patients: 60 total knee replacements, 18 total hip replacements and 27 foot and ankle procedures. myut.link/i8t

More than a decade after a toxic algae bloom left 400,000 Toledo-area residents without safe drinking water, UToledo researchers have developed a buoy system designed to fight back before blooms ever fully form. The plastic buoys use hydrogel disks — developed in Dr. Yakov Lapitsky, professor and chair of chemical engineering, soft materials lab — to precisely control how a hydrogen peroxide-based algaecide diffuses into surrounding water. A U.S. patent application has been filed and licensing discussions are underway. myut.link/wa1

Members of the Jesup Scott Honors College spent their spring break in Riverton City, Jamaica, partnering with a nonprofit to build a hydroponic garden, distribute hygiene kits and create community art. These students are in the process of forming a student organization dedicated to extending the reach of the International Samaritan partnership. Through ongoing outreach and fundraising efforts on the UToledo campus, students are continuing the work that they started. myut.link/ro5
