🌊 Happening this morning at #OurOcean2026: WIOMSA Executive Director, Dr. Arthur Tuda, will moderate a high-level plenary session on “Pathways to Achieving 30x30 and Protecting the High Seas.”
The panel brings together Kate Walsh, John Kerry, Jochen Flasbarth, and Abubakar Ben Mahamoud to discuss Marine Protected Areas, the 30x30 target, and global ocean protection.
🌊 The WIO-C Pavilion is now open at #OOC11. The first session, “Voices of CSOs in the Western Indian Ocean Region,” highlighted the role of civil society in ocean conservation, sustainable fisheries, and community stewardship.
Ahmed Omar (Somalia) and Nanette Laure (Seychelles) presided over the opening, where WIO-C presented the Mombasa Manifesto, calling for stronger ocean governance, community legitimacy, and regional cooperation.
📍 The WIO-C Pavilion, located in the Sailfish Room at PrideInn Hotel & Spa, will host sessions over the next three days on fisheries co-management, blue tourism, mangrove conservation, marine plastic pollution, and blue economy transformation.
WIOMSA is proud to participate in the 11th Our Oceans Conference in Mombasa—the first time this global event is being hosted on the African continent. A major milestone for ocean stewardship in Africa and beyond.
Throughout the conference, WIOMSA will engage with partners and stakeholders on key issues including youth leadership, climate resilience, blue carbon, sustainable fisheries, and inclusive ocean governance.
Happening now: WIOMSA Executive Director, Dr. Arthur Tuda, is delivering a keynote on Marine Protected Areas and Biodiversity at the Our Oceans Conference in Mombasa.

Estuarize 2.0 is advancing stakeholder-driven estuary management across the Western Indian Ocean through work in the Tana (Kenya), Ruvu (Tanzania), Bons Sinais (Mozambique), and uMgeni (South Africa) estuaries.
Estuaries are vital for biodiversity, ecosystem health, and local livelihoods. Yet growing population pressures and resource use continue to challenge their sustainable management across the region.
Building on Estuarize-WIO (2016–2019), the project supports collaborative management through Estuary Working Groups (EWGs), helping strengthen local capacity, improve coordination, and promote sustainable estuary governance.

As the Blue Economy grows, securing the rights of coastal communities becomes more important than ever.
The Blue Tenure Transitions (BTT) Working Group, a WIOMSA SCALABLE grantee, is working to ensure people remain at the centre of ocean governance.
Through policy engagement in South Africa and Zanzibar, BTT is helping connect tenure rights with biodiversity conservation, marine spatial planning, and Blue Economy initiatives.
Using participatory mapping, storytelling, and community-led approaches, BTT is bringing lived experiences into decision-making spaces—from local communities to the 2025 UN Ocean Conference.
Tenure isn’t just about boundaries. It’s about belonging. 🌍💙
🌊 This #WorldOceanDay2026, we celebrate progress toward stronger Marine Protected Areas for our blue planet.
The CliMPA project—a WIOMSA SCALABLE grantee—is helping enhance the climate resilience and effectiveness of MPAs across the Western Indian Ocean.
Strong MPAs are more than boundaries—they must be climate-smart, locally grounded, and built for the future. Protecting marine ecosystems also means protecting the communities that depend on them.

🌊 #WorldOceanDay Feature: The #Nexus project, supported through WIOMSA’s SCALABLE programme, is working across Kisite Mpunguti, Bazaruto, iSimangaliso, and Nosy Hara to strengthen ocean conservation through shared knowledge and collaboration.
By strengthening the science–policy–practice interface, Nexus helps turn climate and marine research into actionable policy for stronger marine protected areas that are practical, equitable, and community-informed.
