What is scholarly impact? How can we measure it? Join us at this #plenary panel at the @AACSB @AOMConnect conference in #Dublin, #Ireland, next week. In 1975, Steven Kerr published a highly influential article. His argument was deceptively simple: Organizations routinely reward one behavior while hoping to get another. For example, soldiers in Vietnam were rewarded for completing their tour of duty regardless of whether the war was won, so they behaved accordingly. Insurance clerks were rewarded for showing up on time rather than for accuracy, so accuracy suffered. The mechanism in each case was identical: The performance measurement and reward system was designed for one purpose, but applied to produce a completely different outcome. Half a century later, business schools are committing the same folly, but not with soldiers or insurance clerks, but with how scholarly impact is measured and rewarded. We publish thousands of peer-reviewed articles on how to measure performance fairly, how to motivate people effectively, and how to align reward systems with strategic goals. So, we can, and should, do better.
