The final day of the 30th AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention in Minneapolis brought it home in the most powerful way. Delegates honored those we’ve lost through a moving In Memoriam presentation, passed resolutions that will shape the direction of the labor movement, and closed with a panel celebrating Minnesota labor and the communities that make this movement strong. "Four days. Hundreds of union leaders. One movement," said Costa. "To everyone who represented ATU this week in Minneapolis, you made us proud. The work doesn't stop when we leave this convention. We carry Minneapolis with us. Every resolution passed, every story told this week fuels what comes next. The ATU is ready." ATU showed up and showed out all week. Day 3 of the 30th AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention hit close to home for the ATU. ATU Local 241 President and Business Agent Keith Hill represented our members from the Chicago Transit Authority, one of the three largest transit systems in the United States, on a panel addressing one of the most urgent crises facing our members: workplace violence. Hill brought the reality of what bus operators and maintenance workers face every single day. Hill also highlighted a major win, an Illinois law that took effect June 1 requiring protective barriers in buses and mandating transit ambassadors, a direct result of the ATU’s fight for our members. That fight carried straight to the convention floor, where International President John Costa spoke in support of Resolution 8: We Want Healthy Lives and Safe Workplaces. “Transit workers are assaulted on the job every single day,” declared Costa with the entire ATU delegation standing with him. “We have lost our members to senseless acts of violence, and we’ve had enough. The entire labor movement must stand together and demand that every worker has the right to come home safe after a day’s work. Not one more!” Resolution 8 was adopted. The ATU will not stop until every worker is protected.

Day 2 of the 30th AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention brought the heat. International President John Costa was front and center, taking the stage to deliver the credentials report to delegates from unions across the country, including our very own ATU leaders. Sessions throughout the day highlighted the AFL-CIO Sports Council and focused on two of labor’s most urgent priorities: Organizing to Win and Building Worker Power. Real workers telling real stories about what’s at stake for working people everywhere. The evening brought hundreds of union members together at U.S. Bank Stadium for the Celebration of Solidarity. Minneapolis and the labor movement showed out! Day 3 starts tomorrow.

Day 1 of the 30th AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention is here! International President John Costa started the morning as an Executive Committee member of the AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department (TTD) to advocate for our members. Next, Costa headed to the AFL-CIO General Session, where he was honored to be re-elected as an AFL-CIO Vice President. Representing ATU on the convention floor alongside IP Costa were our elected Delegates and Alternate Delegates from Locals across the United States. “Working people are under attack, and we’ll continue to fight like hell alongside them,” said Costa. “When our 200,000 ATU members show up with millions of other union siblings, that’s a powerful message to anyone who thinks they can come for our rights and our livelihoods. We won't back down.” Congratulations, IP Costa, President Liz Shuler, and Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond on your re-election! The 30th AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention is officially underway. Before the main event, International President John Costa joined representatives from the U.S. and around the world, including ATU Canada President John Di Nino, at today’s Global Pre-Conference Symposium in Minneapolis. The agenda was organizing strategies, good jobs, and defending worker and human rights worldwide. “Workers in the United States and Canada are facing the same threats from the same forces,” said Costa and Di Nino. “We’re here in Minneapolis because the only answer to a global attack on workers is a global labor movement that fights back together.” This is what solidarity looks like. “Our Voice, Our Power” and “Who Are We? ATU!” echoed in the halls of Congress, as International President John Costa led our 150-strong delegation at a Capitol Hill rally before heading to lobby on behalf of our Union for the final day of our 2026 Legislative Conference. “Congress is going to hear our voices loud and clear. Our stories are powerful. We do the important job of moving people every day. We face serious dangers on the job. We’re the backbone of our communities,” Costa told attendees. “After this rally, we hit the halls of Congress to press our legislators on the serious matters of transit funding, transit worker safety, AI, and the need for an operator on board autonomous vehicles. We’re showing our legislators we aren’t just a Union, we’re a movement, a force to be reckoned with.” At the rally, our friends on Capitol Hill, Rep. Tim Kennedy (D-NY), Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL), Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-NJ), Rep. Shomari Figures (D-AL), and Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA), delivered strong messages of solidarity. From Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-CO) to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to Tom Barrett (R-MI) to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Rep. Rob Bresnan(R-PA), our more than 150 attendees visited more than 200 Members of Congress to push legislators on our Union’s priorities. Speeches by Members of Congress, ATU State Legislative campaigns, Local Transit Funding, Autonomous Vehicles, and Lobby Day prep took center stage as International President John Costa kicked off day two of the 2026 ATU Legislative Conference in Washington, DC. Representative Greg Casar (D-TX) addressed attendees about his roots as an organizer in the labor movement and his role as Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Longtime ally of ATU, Congressman Rick Larsen (D-WA), ranking member on House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee spoke about the transit funding and safety measures our Union helped secure in the recently introduced BUILD America 250 Act. Attendees also heard panels of ATU Local leaders discussing strategies of their State Legislative Campaigns on transit funding, safety, school bus, worker power, Autonomous Vehicles, and micro transit. Breakout workshops were held again on the Power Mapping and Lobbying in Practice, the Unique Risks of AI, and Effective Safety Committees. To end the day, attendees were prepped for the all-important Capitol Hill Rally and Lobby Day tomorrow to meet with their Members of Congress on the critical issues impacting our Union. “From transit funding to autonomous vehicles, health and safety, workers’ right to organize, and more, you’ve learned a lot over the past few days about the issues impacting us,” said International President John Costa in his closing remarks. “Tomorrow is a big day for us to hit the Halls of Congress and talk about these issues. Congress hears from lobbyists all day long, who have never driven a bus or fixed a rail car in their lives. What they don’t hear is enough from workers like us on the frontlines.
