ALT Graphic: Deep purple background overlaid with a solid red umbrella. Text on top reads: What does the red umbrella mean? The red umbrella is the global symbol of sex workers' rights, solidarity, protection, and resistance. First used in 2001, sex workers marched through Venice carrying red umbrellas to protest violence, stigma, unsafe working conditions, and human rights abuses.
