At our banquet tonight we closed the book on the 2026 season. We celebrated a season with many memorable moments and a graduated senior class that will be tough to replace. We’ll catch our breath then start working to see who’s up to that task.

Happy 69th birthday to Brett Butler. Butler played most of 7 seasons with the Dodgers. He made his only AS appearance in 1991 with LA, the year he led the NL in runs and walks. He also showed incredible toughness when he returned to the game after battling cancer in 1996.

"In my opinion, the greatest game ever pitched was between the San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Braves on July 2, 1963. Forty-two-year-old Warren Spahn and 25-year-old Juan Marichal each went 16 innings and the game ended 1-0 on a home run by Willie Mays. Each pitcher threw over 200 pitches. Spahn threw 201. Marichal threw 227. There were seven future Hall of Fame players in that game, including Spahn and Marichal. We will never see that again because the game won’t allow it. But both guys were prepared to go as long as it took. And this game was not a fluke, both pitchers won 20 games that season. For Spahn, it was his 13th 20-win season and for Marichal, it was his first of 6. My highest pitch count was 232 in a game against the Red Sox in 1974. I pitched 12 innings, struck out 19, walked 10, and had a no decision. My counter-part, Luis Tiant threw 180 pitches in 14 1/3 innings and took the loss 4-3. We were on a 4-man rotation and pitched on 3 day’s rest. I had 26 complete games in 1973 and 1974 and didn’t even lead the league. Gaylord Perry had 29 in 1973 and Ferguson Jenkins had 29 in 1974." Today in 1973, Steve Garvey enters at 1st base for the Dodgers in the 4th inning of LA’s game against Philadelphia, marking the 1st time the historic quartet of Garvey-Lopes-Russell-Cey play infield together. The group will soon become LA’s starting infield for the next 8 years.

Liv Cooper was named a Johnny Bench Award winner for Top High School Catchers in Kentucky. Her and the Bullitt East Softball team will face George Rogers Clark tomorrow at John Cropp Stadium in the KHSAA State Tournament Semifinals at 6:30p.m. with a whiteout theme. #BESoftball

Bullitt East’s Mackenzie Mingus couldn’t find her change-up but didn’t panic, becoming just the second pitcher this year to shut out Assumption and giving the Chargers their first-ever win in the fast-pitch softball state tournament: courier-journal.com/story/sp…

Bullitt East softball will depart for the state tournament at 6:15a.m. and baseball will leave at 2:00p.m. Fans are encouraged to line the streets and parking lots to send these two groups out. Softball will be a whiteout, then blackout for baseball. #BEBaseball #BESoftball

Bullitt East is competing in both the KHSAA Baseball and Softball State Tournaments. I caught up with both programs on how they're getting support from the Mount Washington community, as they fight to win a State Championship.
