Today we will meet with media from throughout California and guide them through the recently renovated San Diego California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Soon, thousands will walk through the doors of the temple during an open house as we prepare for the August 23 rededication. It is an amazing blessing to see the Lord’s temples dotting the earth. I love the house of the Lord.

The open house for the San Diego California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began on Monday, June 15, 2026, with a media day for journalists and invited guests. Doors will open to the public from June 18 through July 11, 2026 (excluding Sundays). The temple, which closed in 2023 for extensive renovation, will be dedicated on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 11 a.m. (rebroadcast at 2 p.m.). “The temple is the most sacred place on earth to us as members of the Church,” said Elder Neil L. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released an implementation guide to help members and leaders prepare for the changes to the Sunday class meeting schedule that begin on September 6, 2026. Global leaders recently gathered at the 3rd annual International Dialogue of Civilizations and Tolerance Conference in Abu Dhabi to discuss “The Impact of New Media and AI on Family and Community.” Elder Adilson de Paula Parrella of the Middle East/Africa North Area Presidency spoke during the conference’s opening ceremony, emphasizing the family as “the most important unit in society and the foundation for individual growth.” In a prerecorded message delivered for the closing ceremony, Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles highlighted the family as the central environment where character is formed. He described family as “a mirror that helps us become aware of imperfections” and the ideal setting to model wise and balanced technology use. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is coordinating with government agencies and other organizations to support community response efforts following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani, in Mindanao on Monday, June 8, 2026. The earthquake affected more than 88,000 people and damaged homes, public facilities, roads, utilities, and other infrastructure. Local Church leaders continue to assess needs and determine how best to provide food, water, sanitation, and other immediate assistance. Local Church members, including some who were also impacted by the earthquake, have begun assisting neighbors as communities work to recover. Several Church meetinghouses in affected areas have been opened to accommodate evacuees after being assessed as safe and suitable for use as temporary shelters. In the temple we learn to distinguish between the holy and the profane, the clean and the unclean.   The words at the door of the temple—“Holiness to the Lord”— are both an invitation and a commandment to all who would enter.  Just as this newly dedicated Yorba Linda California Temple is in the world and yet is a place apart, here each of us learns how to be in the world and yet not of the world.    Gradually all that is impure or unworthy in our character is rooted out as we draw closer to the Lord in His house. Our very desires change over time. It is a conditioning for life in a holy, celestial realm.

Years ago, I flew a brand-new B747 on its first flight from Seattle to San Francisco. It was a clear day, and I was amazed by the beauty of the remarkable lineup of six solitary volcanoes, from Mount Rainier and Mount Hood to Mount Shasta. Today, along the same route, we find more than six temples proclaiming Holiness to the Lord—the newest being the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple, which I was blessed to dedicate today. The house of the Lord lifts our vision, reorients our hearts, and reminds us who we are and whose we are. Just as these great mountains mark the landscape, holy temples—and the covenants we make there—mark and connect our lives with the God of the Universe. When you come to the temple during times of personal trial and great sorrow, you will find sweet peace for your soul. When you come to give thanks and worship God, our Heavenly Father, you will receive a special measure of affirmation and confidence from Him. The temple will enrich your lives, inspire you to create in your homes and families a spirit of hope and peace, and endow you with blessings from on high.
