Officers from our University City Division, with support from our Aviation Unit, recently apprehended two repeat offenders following a stolen vehicle alert that led to a vehicle pursuit and an armed robbery.
University City Division officers responded to a license plate reader alert for a vehicle reported stolen by the Salisbury Police Department. Our officers located the vehicle in the areas of East Mallard Creek Church Road and North Tryon Street. The vehicle fled from officers but was tracked to the 8300 block of Vinoy Boulevard with assistance of our Aviation Unit.
Two suspects fled on foot from the vehicle, with one being quickly apprehended without incident. The second suspect approached an occupied vehicle in the 7300 block of IBM Drive and demanded access at gunpoint. Officers took the second suspect into custody shortly after without further incident.
Derrick Jewone Blackwell, 30, was arrested and charged with:
· Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle
· Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
· Felony Possession of Marijuana
· Carrying a Concealed Weapon
Blackwell has an extensive criminal history and is on active federal probation.
Deante Corey Baker, 29, was arrested and charged with:
· Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle
· Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
· Possession of a Stolen Firearm
· Felony Flee to Elude
· Felony Possession of Marijuana
· Felony Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance
· Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon
· Carrying a Concealed Weapon
Baker also has an extensive criminal history and was recently released after serving seven years.
