ALT Today, a federal court blocked key parts of the president’s executive order attacking elections and voting rights. The court sided with Oregon and Washington, ruling that the president cannot impose new rules that disenfranchise voters – and affirming the Constitution’s guarantee that states have the authority to run their own elections.
ALT Oregon was the first state in the country to use vote-by-mail in a presidential election—a voting system that is safe, secure, and popular with voters because of how it improves access to democracy. The executive order would have required votes sent by mail to arrive no later than Election Day to be counted, even though 18 states, including Washington and Oregon, accept ballots postmarked on or before Election Day.

ALT Law enforcement witnesses described “startling” excessive force from federal agents that interfered with Portland Police Bureau’s ability to manage protests. Two agents from the federal government – the most knowledgeable about the situation at the ICE building before deployment – did not request deployment and were not consulted. The Ninth Circuit also issued an order yesterday maintaining status quo (in which Guard is federalized but cannot be deployed) until further order of that court.
ALT The district court judge indicated that her goal is to issue a decision by sometime Sunday, before the second TRO expires at 11:59pm. The Ninth Circuit has yet to set a date to rehear the case en banc. They are likely waiting to see how the district court rules. We’ll continue to share updates as we have them.
