We are a cross-party group of MPs working together to scrutinise the UK Government's work on international development policy. See what we're working on👇
ALT “I welcome the NAO's comprehensive examination of whether the FCDO responds effectively to humanitarian crises.
"The report made clear that as resources tighten, the FCDO must do more to address the inevitable limitations in its approach to ensure the long-term effectiveness and value for money of its crisis response function.
International Development Committee
ALT “The International Development Committee’s recent report assessing the value for money of the UK’s aid budget reached similar conclusions; stressed the importance of long-term development in preventing crises before they start. As the world gets ever more unstable, and crises more regular, we will continue to scrutinise the Government’s progress in this area.”

In our session on the situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, we heard from Allegra Pacheco, Chief of Party at the West Bank Protection Consortium. She spoke about the attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank and their vulnerability.
Chair @SarahChampionMP has responded to the Foreign Secretary’s announcement of sanctions, co-ordinated with international partners, targeting individuals and entities involved in financing and enabling settler violence in the occupied West Bank.
ALT “I welcome the Foreign Secretary’s words about violence against Palestinian communities in the West Bank and the measures announced to advance peace and security in Israel and Palestine.
The Foreign Secretary is right to state that expansion and violence is illegal and a fundamental threat to the viability of a two-state solution, and to a sustainable
peace settlement.
ALT “We have previously called on the UK Government to take a greater stand on violence against Palestinian communities, and I’m encouraged that it is now moving in the
right direction.
While there is clearly still further to go, I hope that today’s actions will prove to be a vital stepping stone towards long-term peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis.”

On the subject of the UK's International Climate Finance, Dharshan Wignarajah, Director at @climatepolicy, told us that the timing of government action is "mission critical" to unlock greater investment to tackle climate change.
In our session Silvia Carolina Herrera Hernandez, Coffee Producer and Secretary of the Board of Directors at @CLACFairtrade, spoke about the need for further funding to support smallholder farmers and the people they employ to tackle poverty, and the impact of climate change.
Our Chair @SarahChampionMP wrote to the Foreign Secretary at the @FCDOGovUK, seeking reassurance that Official Development Assistance will be maintained at 0.3%. The response did not fill the Committee with confidence.

ALT “The Minister rightly states that international aid both supports those in extreme poverty and boosts our security at home. However, I’m disappointed that that she could not go further and explicitly say that the Government is committing to ODA spending at 0.3% of GNI for the duration of the spending review period.Â
International Development Committee
ALT “This ambiguity sits awkwardly with what I was hearing at last week’s Global Partnerships Conference. The Foreign Secretary spoke purposefully about how global partnerships can drive international development to prevent crises in the first place and we saw a new Compact setting out how we will strengthen international cooperation to meet the global challenges that lie ahead."
Sarah Champion, Chair
The International Development Committee and the @CPA_UK welcomed the South African delegation to the Global Partnership Conference in Parliament, a great opportunity to create global connections to end to extreme poverty.

The UK aid watchdog @icai_uk has today released a report warning of mounting global pressures as the UK reshapes its approach to aid – a lot of which we agree with.
Head to our website to read Chair @SarahChampionMP’s comment in full: committees.parliament.uk/com…
ALT “As we get to grips with aid budgets falling worldwide, both my Committee and the UK’s aid watchdog have now raised serious concerns about the impact on some of the world’s poorest people, particularly in fragile and conflict affected states. But the fact remains; currently we only have the
ALT skeleton of the Government’s new approach to aid spending. The IDC’s future of aid report called for Ministers to put flesh on the bones and I hope that ICAI’s new report will further focus FCDO minds on this task.”

There are still significant gaps in what we know about the Government's new approach to international aid.
@FCDOGovUK must communicate what success looks like and how international partners will be involved - and rebuild the case for aid ⬇️

Foreign Secretary @YvetteCooperMP admitted to us that the Government needs to do more to link the work of international development with defence.
We look forward to the Government taking steps to realise this.
Today at 2.30pm we're questioning the Foreign Secretary @YvetteCooperMP and the International Development Minister Baroness @JennyChapman at the @FCDOGovUK, to explore recent allocations for Overseas Development Assistance after cuts.

Peace agreements are 64% less likely to fail when women meaningfully participate, yet in 2023 women made up only 9.6% of negotiators.
The Government must do more to aid change, and deliver on its obligations to the Women, Peace and Security agenda  ⬇️

After five decades of the Basher al-Assad regime, Dr Ahmed Ekzayez, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management spoke about the opportunity for Syrians "to build an inclusive and stable Syria."
We are disappointed with the Government's aid spending allocation announcement, which pits development spending against defence spending. As Chair @SarahChampionMP told the Foreign Secretary, development spending is often a first form of defence.
Our session questioning @HFalconerMP, Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, as we explore recent humanitarian developments in the Syrian Arab Republic has started.

On the subject of the UK's International Climate Finance, @lizwathuti, Founder and Director at @GGI_Kenya told us, "the most effective climate finance is the one that is supposed to reach the communities even before the crisis reaches to them."
We’ve launched a new inquiry into the @FCDOGovUK's approach to higher education and research partnerships.

ALT What role do higher education and research partnerships play in the FCDO’s wider development strategy?
We’ve launched an inquiry
International Development Committee
ALT “Higher education is one of the UK’s most significant exports, while mobilising education and research partnerships has driven significant progress on international development goals. With reduced budgets, how will the FCDO use higher education and research partnerships to further progress on their new development goals?”

Tomorrow at 2pm we're examining the UK's International Climate Finance, exploring the impact of climate change on local communities in Kenya and Bangladesh, and the benefits, barriers and processes involved in accessing UK climate finance.
