Good afternoon, Dr.
@rodneyrugyema @Makerere
We address you directly, because following the cancellation of yesterday's Debate, you personally swore to never again allow physical campaigns and engagements at Makerere University. Today's development therefore comes as no surprise.
We have since received an E-signed letter issued on a weekend purportedly from the 92nd Electoral Commission. We note, with concern, that the Chairperson's physical signature is absent. We can only conclude that she was either unavailable, unaware, or otherwise engaged in official duties when this directive was dispatched in her name.
The University administration is once again using the Electoral Commission as an instrument to suffocate student democracy. Hiding behind Section 10(b) to further ban physical campaigns is a calculated attempt to suppress student voice and engineer electoral outcomes in favour of preferred candidates.
Compelling aspirants to campaign exclusively in virtual spaces under threat of automatic disqualification is a direct violation of the fundamental right to free expression and democratic participation.
We remind all concerned that the supreme law of this land supersedes any colonial, dictatorial policy crafted to serve sectional interests.
This so-called "Final Warning" does not speak for the Students' Guild. It speaks for University oppressors determined to control who leads our Guild.
Students of
@Makerere do not be intimidated. Your right to campaign, to vote, and to be heard cannot be extinguished by a 2:00 p.m. deadline.
We reject this directive in its entirety!
