Why is an HIV Cure still needed when modern ART treatment:
- is incredibly effective
- has minimal toxicity
- life expectancy is approaching that of someone HIV-
- offers a growing number of options
- U=U, stops transmission in its tracks
This chart offers one reason; while life expectancy is looking great, comorbidities are largely unchanged
- in People Living W/ HIV (PLHIV), comorbidities appear about 15 years earlier than those without HIV
What are comorbidities?
The simultaneous presence of two or more diseases or medical conditions in a person
Why are comorbidities more prevalent at an earlier age in PLHIV?
- chronic inflammation
- immune dysfunction
- ART side effects
Comorbidities may include cardiovascular disease, metabolic issues, liver/kidney disease, mental health diagnoses, neurocognitive decline, cancer & infections
As the science stands, increased risk of comorbidities is very real for many so long as an HIV Cure is not discovered.
And while an HIV Cure may not be a silver bullet for all these concerns, it would certainly put us in a much better position.
The science of understanding HIV as we age is blossoming and will become increasingly more important as the average age of a PLHIV increases and comorbidities materialize.
ART advancements are miraculous,
but an HIV Cure is the horizon we must focus on.
