When foraging from a scrubby tree beside a chain-link fence — in this case, while crossing from the Bronx into Manhattan — I look around to see what others are eating. If the birds are ignoring even whole, plump fallen fruit, then two mulberries, or maybe three, is my limit.

Kingfish ambul thiyal and accompaniments, AA Lankan's Cafe, Tompkinsville, Staten Island. The hefty pair of lamprais at the next table were equally enticing.

Chicken paprikash and nokedli, hand-torn by the looks of them; langoš, a garlic-swabbed, deep-fried flatbread; an apricot palacsinta, filled to order; and a poppy-seed sponge cake at last weekend's Hungarian Festival in New Brunswick, New Jersey

Jackfruit arils are commonly sunny yellow. At the Vo Duc Minh produce stand, on Mulberry St. in Manhattan's Chinatown, another variety has made what might be a brief appearance; the flesh, deep orange, is decidedly sweeter. Also: a jackfruit vendor in Siem Reap, Cambodia (2006).

Fly heads — garlic chives, minced pork, and the namesake fermented black beans — at Taiwanese Gourmet, Elmhurst, Queens. Let your friends try it before you put a name to it. Also: crispy fried pork chops; fish in spicy black bean sauce; cuttlefish and squid with yellow chives.

For show, and for dough: At Ace's Pizza in the Rock Center concourse, my Veggie Garden personal pizza was smothered in squash, spinach, bell peppers, red onion, and fresh garlic, but the tall-lipped, crisp crust underneath held the real appeal.

A mostly vegetarian Bangladeshi sampler at Ittadi Garden & Grill, Jackson Heights, Queens. In the company of amaranth, lentils, bitter melon, and spinach, plus roti and a palate-freshening salad, the lone intruder (at lower left) was shol fish, more infamously known as snakehead.
