The first time I got to tour a major warehouse was back in 2016, during a trip to Arkansas to report on Walmart. Not only was every moving piece part of an intricate system, the size of it all was incredible.
And so when
@ajay_bcv and
@ZeezaCole added
@gather_ai to the
@BainCapVC portfolio, I was especially interested in how its drone vision software was able to fit into this ecosystem. I had seen a few attempts at inventory-management drones get announced and then fade away, unable to match the demands of the complexity and scale — including the ones demoed during that Walmart trip.
But after getting to learn about the company from our team and Gather AI's CEO, Sankalp, its edge became clear.
Not only is its tech stack superior to those who've tried it before, its software seamlessly works in off-the-shelf drones, which significantly simplifies the process.
It shouldn't be surprising why the tech is better, either. The co-founders — Sankalp, Daniel and Geetesh — have each done groundbreaking work, and were all part of
@CMU_Robotics' AirLab team, which among other things built for the US Navy the first fully autonomous helicopter flight demo in 2014, establishing a foundation for Navy R&D continuing today.
On top of that, they've built an impressive commercial team around themselves, too. We've got a new Founder Story feature on our site that gives more background on the founders, how the software can save days' worth of time and millions of dollars, and what's next for Gather AI.
