I wanted to play AM2R, a free remake, so badly in highschool but I didn't have a PC. That wasn't enough to stop me, I got it running on my fucking xbox. If there's a will, there's a way
People need to understand that there is an actual fucking difference in watching a playthrough and playing a game yourself, and claiming to "really like a game" you watched while making no effort to play it just shows you're not THAT interested

In 2016, a fan released AM2R, a full remake of Metroid II. He had spent around 10 years making it. Days after release, Nintendo issued DMCA takedowns and the project was officially stopped.

Adore almost the entire series but from an actual combat perspective it's the GBA games and ESPECIALLY Dread that are by far the standouts (though I really like the 3ds Metroid 2 remake as well even though am2r kinda gets it better)

AM2R released in 2016 and Metroid Samus Returns released in 2017. Do you really think they made it in a single year?

Hard to say, I still consider this a good outcome va the alternative… we never getting AM2R and all of his gamedev work amounting to nothing. I can’t comment on Moon Studios’ situation, I lack insight outside of the hearsay people like to comment on.

Even if that was true that doesnt at all apply to the guy who made AM2R

I've always found it kinda fascinating that Nintendo waited a few days after release to squash AM2R and not during development. There are times when Big N is aggressive against fan projects and other times when they seem to conspicuously look the other way.

According to interviews, Samus Returns began because Sakamoto wanted to make a new 2D Metroid and he used Mercury Steam's work on Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirrors of Fate to convince higher-ups that it was a worthwhile venture I doubt AM2R had much influence on it at all

The story doesn’t end badly though. The developer of AM2R impressed Moon Studios with his fan game so much, that they hired him to work on Ori and the Will of the Wisps. There’s also a community ran continuation of AM2R that’s fantastic. I’d highly recommend checking it out.
