LOTR Artist Spotlight: Middle-earth Landscapes by Brett Woods Fine Art 🎨
Some of the best Tolkien art comes from artists who simply paint what inspires them. For Brett Woods, that inspiration came from revisiting a scene that had stayed with him since childhood.
Known for painting landscapes and wildlife, Brett found himself returning to Middle-earth after years of commission work. What started with one iconic scene soon reignited his passion for painting and opened the door to capturing the epic landscapes and atmosphere that make Tolkien’s world so memorable.
Here’s what he shared about his journey:
“I started off painting landscapes and wildlife back in 2015 as a hobby. I worked as a bricklayer and would only paint when I had free time.
As the years went on, I started doing commissions for people pertaining to landscapes or wildlife. It got to the point where I was only painting commissions and never anything I wanted to paint.
I was burnt out after a commission I did for a client, and I decided that I was not doing any more. Shortly after, I watched The Lord of the Rings with my family.
When the Gates of Argonath came on the screen, I was instantly inspired to paint it. It was such an iconic moment for me as a child. So I painted it, and that kick-started painting more.
I always loved epic landscapes, and trying to capture the atmosphere of some of the scenes has been a lot of fun.”
It’s amazing how one scene can spark a creative journey. For Brett, it was the towering Argonath standing above the Anduin. Since then, his love of epic landscapes and Tolkien’s world has continued to inspire his work, bringing some of Middle-earth’s most memorable vistas to life on canvas.
