On this day in 2002, 24 years agoโฆ
You can hear my cousin, Leanne, in this video saying to Michael Jackson:
โCan I just say, on behalf of MD Productions in Liverpool, Michael, you are our greatest inspiration, and we love you.โ
Even writing those words now feels surreal.
This was part of a very special celebration marking 20 years since the release of Thriller โ the biggest-selling album of all time. Michael Jackson himself was the guest of honour.
After a number of meetings, opportunities and a lot of determination, I was given the chance to take over 80 people from Liverpool โ dancers, singers, family and friends โ to Leicester Square to be part of this incredible event.
What an experience.
As part of the show, this trio I created for the showโ my cousin Leanne, Jonathan and Sarah โ performed an acapella version of Human Nature, one of my favourite Michael Jackson songs. They finished the performance with Leanne speaking directly to Michael, and it remains one of the most powerful moments Iโve ever witnessed.
When I sometimes question how far I can go, what goals are achievable, or whether something is too big, I often come back to this memory.
Because if youโd told the young lad from Liverpool that one day he would:
โจ Take 80 people to London to perform at a Michael Jackson celebration
โจ Open the show and close the first half
โจ Stand on stage with the biggest artist on the planet
โจ Celebrate the biggest-selling album in music history
โจ And hear his cousin say, โOn behalf of MB Productions in Liverpoolโฆโ directly to Michael Jacksonโฆ
โฆI probably wouldnโt have believed you.
But it happened.
A reminder that dreams donโt have to make sense to anyone else. They just need to make sense to you.
Anything is possible.
No dream is too big.
