Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple in Okusaga, Kyoto, is famous for its 1,200 stone Buddha statues, but Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple, located down the slope, and Toribeno, just below Kiyomizu-dera Temple, were open-air burial grounds a thousand years ago.
At least nine major temples and Shinto shrines were completely destroyed by fire in the first five months of 2026 alone. This marks a clear spike compared to the usual roughly 60 fires per year across Japan’s 150,000 temples and shrines, where total burn-downs of historic sites are rare. 
Here’s a quick rundown of the main ones from early 2026:
• Suga Shrine (Jan) — Kitakyushu.
• Shiraikuji Temple and Hottoji Temple (Feb) — Ehime Prefecture (one fatality in a related priest’s residence).
• Shorinji Temple (Feb) — Yamaguchi, 5 deaths.
• Renshoji Temple (Apr) — Toyama.
• Urufushine Shrine (Apr) — Mie Prefecture.
• Furumachi Atago Shrine (May 6) — Niigata, a 300-year-old site.
• Daihoji Temple (May 16) — Toyama, main
