SO WERE BAFs REALLY STATIC? Not quite. Their gross equity exposure of 66-71% looked largely unchanged, so it could enjoy equity-like taxation. But their net equity exposure kept moving beneath the surface.

In fact, the graph below shows how BAFs adjust their equity exposure. These funds’ net equity has varied from 54%-58% over the last one year, while their derivatives exposures have stayed at 11-12%.

ADVANTAGE OF THIS METHOD - The fund retains its equity-oriented tax status. - Transaction costs are typically lower than physically buying and selling stocks. That's why derivatives have become the preferred tool for most BAFs.

Actually, most BAFs don't adjust exposure by aggressively buying and selling stocks. Instead, they use derivatives. Suppose a fund owns 5% in Reliance. If it wants to reduce exposure, it may not sell the stock at all; it can sell Reliance futures against part of that holding.

TRANSACTION COST BAFs could keep buying and selling stocks to change allocations. But that comes with a cost. Frequent trading increases transaction expenses and can eat into returns. So, fund managers needed a better way.

CONTEXT SETTING BAFs are supposed to: - Reduce equity allocation when markets look expensive - Increase the equity sleeve when markets look attractive But despite market volatility, many funds looked surprisingly ‘static’. That said, appearances can be deceptive 👇

🇧🇬 El Equipo Argentino de Antropología Forense (EAAF) fue expositor en el 24° Encuentro Trienal de la Asociación Internacional de Ciencias Forenses (@IAFS2026), desarrollado de manera conjunta con el 15° Congreso de la Sociedad Internacional de Radiología e Imagen Forense (ISFRI 2026) y el 17° Encuentro Científico Anual de la Academia Balcánica de Ciencias Forenses (BAFS 2026).
