Pick up a tool. Any tool. Screwdriver, hammer, wrench.
Put it in your pocket or backpack and carry it with you for a day.
Did you feel unsafe with it? A person can be killed with a screwdriver, hammer, or wrench. They can be used as blunt weapons, and also have pointy bits that can stab people.
But what did these tools do while in your backpack or pocket?
Nothing.
They are not dangerous beasts with minds of their own. It was not like you put a poisonous snake in your backpack that could lash out and bite you or anyone nearby at any time.
This is how we feel about guns.
They are tools. They are a piece of metal and plastic which has no will and no independent action. It is just there if we need it, like any another tool we have with us is just there if we need it.
Does that make sense?
