I learned Maya in high school out of sheer willpower and determination to set my laptop on fire. It worked, but I don’t think it made me any better at anything. I just had more hands on with the system. I spent thousands of hours on random projects, but I didn’t have the understanding to specialize anywhere.
In Uni I specialized. Unfortunately it was during the VFX strikes, so I never got a chance to shoot my shot in the field no matter how much I put into it or worked extra on the side to make a name. By the time everything calmed down enough for entry level to be an actual thing again, I was so out of date on software and standards that it just didn’t happen. Wasn’t gonna sit on the sidelines and be broke for my life.
Just redirected the energy to a different job. One that doesnt give me the time to do anything on the side. Actually, last thing I want to do when I get home is look at a pc now.
I’m still hungry. But I’m not starving. I understand that I probably dodged a bullet in the field. Or a mag, honestly. Life takes you directions and not all of them are as off course as they seem.
