WHO IS AN RSM IN THE NIGERIAN ARMY?
If you’ve ever served around a military unit, you’ll know there’s one man everybody takes seriously , whether you’re a recruit, a corporal, or even a senior NCO.
That man is the RSM.
RSM means Regimental Sergeant Major, and in the Nigerian Army, he is regarded as the most senior soldier (NCO) in a battalion/unit when it comes to discipline, standards, and soldiering culture.
But here’s what many people don’t understand…
- RSM IS AN APPOINTMENT, NOT A RANK
Yes, the RSM is not a “rank” like Sergeant or Lieutenant. It is an appointment a duty position given to a very senior soldier, usually a Warrant Officer, to serve as the senior-most enlisted adviser and disciplinarian in the unit.
Meaning:
Rank is what you are officially (e.g. Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Warrant Officer)
Appointment is the responsibility you’re assigned (e.g. RSM, CSM, CQMS)
So a soldier may be a Warrant Officer by rank, but once he is posted into that role, his appointment becomes RSM.
WHAT DOES AN RSM DO?
Well, the RSM is basically the man who ensures that a unit remains a real military unit not a gathering of armed men.
1. Discipline and Conduct
He enforces discipline, respect for seniority, and proper military behaviour.
2. Drill and Parade Standards
The RSM is the master of parades, inspections, and ceremonial duties. If your beret is wrong, your boot is dusty, or your uniform is rough… trust me, the RSM will spot it from a distance.
3. Maintaining Unit Traditions
Every battalion has its identity, pride and way of doing things. The RSM protects that culture and ensures standards don’t drop.
4. Advising the Commanding Officer (CO)
The RSM is the CO’s right-hand man when it comes to enlisted matters, discipline issues, and welfare concerns of soldiers.
5. Supervising Other NCOs
Sergeants and Corporals fall under his watch. He shapes them into proper leaders and ensures they understand responsibility.
WHY IS THE RSM IMPORTANT?
Because in the Army, discipline is everything.
The RSM ensures:
- Military order
- Proper dressing and turnout
- Readiness for operations
- Respect for rank and authority
- Strong soldier culture
Without an RSM, standards will collapse.
Finally, In the Nigerian Army, soldiers may fear the Commanding Officer… but they respect the RSM.
Because when the RSM steps out, everybody adjusts uniform, posture, and even attitude.
RSM no be title wey they dash. Na appointment wey you must earn.
